Making Formal Speeches 1. Selection of the topic: • You should have a clear understanding of your topic • Know your audience • Consider the occasion • Medium of the presentation 2. Preparation of the presentation • Do enough research • Organize your information i) Introduction: gain the attention, should set up your subject, prepare the listeners to receive the message
Making Formal Speeches (cont.) How to grab the attention of the audience right away? i) Tell an interesting story about your topic ii) Involve asking questions iii) Humor is another widely used method
Making Formal Speeches (cont.) ii) Body: organize by factors, take the whole and divide it into comparable parts, use transitions. iii) Conclusion: restate the subject, summarize key points and draw the conclusion.
Determining the Presentation Method 1.Presenting Extemporaneously • Most popular and effective methods • Thorough preparation by using notes • The speakers usually rehearse to make sure they have all the parts clearly in mind but they don’t attempt to memorize 2. Memorizing • The most difficult method is to present your speech is from memory • Problems will occur if the presenters miss words during presentation • They will end up panicking

Reading • Reading from a prepared speech • In most business setting, it is an inappropriate method as audience want more personal interaction • In some settings, however, it is quite appropriate • Most of the speakers tend to read aloud in a monotone • Practice with a recorder and listen to yourself
