  1. Etiology and Therapy: Bulimia GLT #12: Discuss the relationship between etiology and therapeutic approach in relation to one disorder

  2. Biological LOA ETIOLOGIES THERAPY SSRIs • Low levels of serotonin • Medial hypothalamus not stimulated

  3. How it works… • SSRI’s block the reuptake of serotonin in the synapse, increasing the available amount

  4. Why it might work… • The serotonin increase might help regulate symptoms related to mood (e.g. low self-esteem) • It may help to stimulate the medial hypothalamus, which will control eating

  5. Cognitive LOA ETIOLOGIES THERAPY Cognitive-behavioural therapy • Body-image distortion hypothesis

  6. How it works… • CBT aims to: • Address and correct the negative thought patterns (e.g. “People will like me if I lose weight) • Encourage the participation in positive activities • The client will keep records of foods and anything that triggers binges

  7. Why it might work… • It will alter the client’s perceptions of themselves, which will work in the long-term • It will identify triggers for binge episodes

  8. Socio-cultural LOA ETIOLOGIES TREATMENT There is none Family therapy CBT • Genetics • Family attitudes • Media exposure

  9. Considerations? • An eclectic approach will work • Are the treatments addressing causes or just the symptoms? • What does the research suggest?
