What is Bulimia Nervosa? • Bulimia Nervosa is a type of eating disorder. • A person with bulimia eats a large amount of food in a short period of time, also known as binging, and tries to avoid gaining weight by purging.
Associated Features • Binging also known as over eating • Purging (induce vomiting)after eating an excessive amount of food • Non-purging which means fasting and excessive exercise • Desperately trying to lose weight • Laxative, diuretics, and diet pill abuse
Associated Features • Accurate body image • Misinterprets emotions with hunger • Thin is “good” • Fat is “bad” • Perfection • Fear of gaining weight • Guilt • Relief after vomiting • Unhappy with their figure • In control with food • Powerless with life situations • Average or above average body weight Thoughts Feeling
Etiology • There is no known cause of bulimia nervosa • Possibilities: • Culture: “Perfect” body image • Family: Hereditary • Stressful events: physical abuse, starting a new job, family problems • Personality traits: Low self-esteem • Biology: Genes, hormones, chemicals in brain
Prevalence • About 8 million Americans suffer from bulimia • 85-90% are female • 42% of bulimics identify themselves as homosexual or bisexual • It mostly affects young adults
Treatment Like most psychological disorders Bulimia can be treated with: • Psychotherapy -Cognitive and Behavioral therapy • Medication -Antidepressants • Self-help
Prognosis • People with bulimia nervosa may be cured with the help of doctors, nutritionists, and therapist to help the patient recover. • It’s based on the patient whether they want to be helped or not.
Prognosis Effects if Bulimia Nervosa is not treated: • Dehydration caused by binging and purging • Permanent gastrointestinal damage • Fluid retention in hands and feet • Dental decays • Menstrual irregularity in females • Destruction of the heart muscles • Collapse of the heart valves
Discussion Question If the media did not portray the “perfect” body to be skinny and tall would it affect societies idea of “beautiful”?
