Planning Stage-40 Marks Parts include: Research (include sources) 2 Hand Sketches 1 Finished Drawing with labels and dimensions. Design Brief Construction Path Bill of Materials (All clearly labeled parts go in neat folder when submitted).
Construction Stage-60 Marks Need one meeting to discuss your potential project with your instructor before you begin. Have two sketches and material to explain what you want to do. Be prepared to defend the appropriateness of your project.
Some Possible Projects: • A design and fabrication project of your choosing (wood and/or sheet metal) • More detailed Sketchup drawings and a prototype. • A project that incorporates carving. • A project that involves moving parts (it could also be a SIMPLE kinetic sculpture as opposed to a machine). • A project with more complicated joinery. • The list goes on…
Project with complicated joinery A Simple Stool
Steps to Success: • Come up with 2 possible ideas. • Create 2 quick sketches related to these ideas. • Talk with Mr. Peterson about which would be the best choice (consider time, materials, difficulty etc.) • Proceed to the Planning Stages.
How do I find something to do? There are many sources for ideas: Look around your room or house for something might need: A desktop organizer, side table, serving tray, Book shelf etc. 3. Websites such as MAKE and “Instructables” have a number of projects under small woodworking projects.
Or… Look through some of the resources we have in the shop (ignore large, elaborate cabinetry-too complicated and too much material). Books at the library are also a great source of images. Search “design” or “wood design”.
Or have a look at the internet… Can be a good source of information and plans-but can also be a complete waste of time. Use your time wisely and plan and build something you like. Do not waste your time or spend your time looking at unrelated material in the lab. You’ll get taken off the computers for the day.
How much time is available? Seven days until Friday June 7th from today. Assuming one hour per class that’s only 42 hours (there will be other work, lessons and cleanup), not even equivalent to a full-time week of work.
