ANS • Part of the PNS (peripheral nervous system). • Serves the internal organs and glands of the body. • It controls the automatic movements, such as heart rate, digestion, and perspiration.
The ANS can be divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. Both are related to emotional responses, such as crying, sweating, heart rate, and other involuntary behavior.
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Branches • Sympathetic-“emergency” system. It prepares the body for fight or flight during times of danger or high emotion • Parasympathetic- quiets the body and returns it to a lower level of arousal. It is most active soon after an emotional event
