Word Processing • Word Processing – the use of computer software to enter and edit text. • With word processing software such as Word, documents such as letters and reports can be easily created and edited.
Four Ways to View a Document • Normal view – simplified layout of the page so you can quickly key, edit, and format text. • Web Layout view – shows how a document will look when viewed as a Web page. • Print Layout – shows how a document will look when it is printed. • Outline view – displays headings and text in outline form.

Saving a File • Save As– Use Save As when saving a file for the first time, saving a file using a different name, or saving a file to a new location. Choose Save As on the File menu and the Save As dialog box appears. • Save– After you have already saved a file, choose Save on the file menu or the Save button on the Standard toolbar. This will update the file, but does not open the Save As dialog box.
Opening a Document • To open an existing document, choose Open on the File menu or click the Open button on the Standard toolbar.
Print Preview • Print Preview - allows you to view a document as it will appear when it is printed. • Choose Print Preview on the File menu or click the Print Preview button on the Standard toolbar.
Printing a Document • To print a document, choose Print on the File menu. The Print dialog box will appear. • You can also click the Print button on the Standard toolbar or on the Print Preview toolbar. The Print dialog box will not appear.

Page Orientation • Portrait orientation – documents are longer than they are wide. • Landscape orientation – documents are wider than they are long. • To change the orientation of a document, choose Page Setup on the File menu.

Summary • Word is a word processing program used to create documents such as letters, memos, forms, reports, and even Web pages. • You can view the document screen in Normal view, Web layout view, Print Layout view, and Outline view.
Summary • The key elements of the Normal view screen are the Standard and Formatting toolbars, ruler, end-of-file marker, insertion point, view buttons, and status bar. • The insertion point can be placed anywhere within the document using the keyboard or mouse.
Summary • The word wrap feature automatically wraps words around to the next line if they will not fit on the current line. • The first time you save a document, the Save As dialog box appears. • Locate and open existing documents through the Open dialog box.
Summary • Print Preview allows you to view a document as it will appear when printed. • Print a document by choosing Print from the File menu or by clicking the Print button on the Standard toolbar. • Use the Page Setup dialog box to change the page orientation.
