  3. Euro ? • the currency used by the Institutions of the European Union • oficial currency of the eurozone • used daily by some 332 million Europeans • the second most traded currency in the world • managed and administered by the European Central Bank ( ECB) in Frankfurt ( Germany)

History of euro • in 1992 the Maastricht Treaty was signed • on 16 December 1995 – the name euro was adopted • at midnight on 1 January 1999 – the currency was introduced in non-physical form ( traveller´s cheques, electronic transfers, banking) • on 1 January 2002 new euro coins and notes were introduced

Euro area • euro banknotes and coins are legal tender in 17 of the 28 Member States of the European Union, including the overseas departments, territories and islands which are either part of, or associated with, euro area countries • these countries form the euro area. • the micro-states of Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City also use the euro, on the basis of a formal arrangement with the European Community. • Andorra, Montenegro and Kosovo likewise use the euro, but without a formal arrangement.

  10. Banknotes • Euro banknotes exist in seven different denominations: • € 5, € 10, € 20, € 50, € 100, € 200, € 500 • they demonstrate architectural styles from different periods in Europe´s history
