  2. Sonar • Uses of Sonar during World War 2: - Submarine - Mines • A sonar device will send out sub-surfaces sound waves and listen for returning echoes. Sonar is a system that uses transmitted and reflected underwater sound waves to detect and locate submerged objects or measure distances underwater.

  3. Sonar Continued • Sonar = SoundNavigation And Ranging • Lewis Nixon invented the first SONAR type device to help in detecting icebergs in 1906. • Paul Langevin took his idea and applied it to detecting submarines, he called it echo-location (like a bat).

  4. Main Use • Sonar in WWII allowed trade to be re-opened • It was put on convoy ships to locate (German) submarines • This allowed convoys to locate incoming attacks on ships allowing them to prepare for the attack

  5. Sonar Usage Today • Today, Sonar is used mainly for under water searches. • Used to find small objects • Sonar is used in the Medical field • Sonography is used to see within the human body

  6. Radar • A system for detecting the presence, direction, distance, and speed of aircrafts, ships, and other objects by sending out pulses of high-frequency electromagnetic waves that are reflected off the object back to the source.

  8. Who and when Radar was Invented • As early as 1866, Heinrich Hertz showed that radio waves could be reflected from solid objects

  9. Usage in WW2 • Radar was used to locate incoming enemy bomb raids • Radar was also used to map the ground

  10. Radar Usage Today • Used as Speedometers for Police officers to tell how fast someone is going. • Used in the Navy, for tracking enemies, allies, missiles, and other various objects.
