Britain • Party Struggles • Labour Party vs. Liberal Party • Labour Party promoted a gradual move towards socialism represented workers • Liberal Party made some social legislation, but represented middle-class business interests • Irish Independence • In 1914 parliament passed a home-rule bill when the war began it was pushed aside • Easter 1916 –Easter Rising militant Irish Nationalist launched a revolt against British rule • 1919 IRA began a guerilla war against British forces • In 1922 moderates in Ireland and Britain reached an agreement and most of Ireland became the self-governing Irish Free State • The Protestant northern counties remained under British rule
United States • Emerged from WWI strong and as a world leader • Red Scare • Fear of radicals and communism in US • Fed demands to limit immigration • Passed laws to limit immigration from Europe, adding to limits already placed on China and Japan
New Foreign Policy • Maginot Line • Massive fortifications built along the French border with Germany • France wanted to make sure the Treaty of Versailles was strictly enforced • Kellogg-Briand Pact • Renounced war as an instrument of national policy • Pursued disarmament • US, Britain, France, & Japan all reduced navies • Germany joined the League of Nations in 1926
