  1. Overview+Detail, Zooming, & Focus+Context Interfaces YOU ARE LOOKING AT TODAY TOPIC WAS WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE Published in ACM Computing Surveys, Association for Computing Machinery, Inc., 2008 Ike Wachuku 1 of 10 PRESENTER

  2. TheAUTHORS Andy Cockburn Amy Karlson Benjamin Bederson • Currently heads the University of Canterbury HCI research group • Former researcher in the Computational User Experiences (CUE) group at Microsoft Research from 2007-2012 • Worked with Dr. Shaun Kane as he interned with the Everyday Technology group at Microsoft Research in WA • Computer Science Professor at the University of MD, college park • Inducted into the CHI academy in 2012 • Served as expert witness for Samsung in Apple Incvs Samsung Co lawsuit 2012 WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 2of 10

  3. MOTIVATION Designers and Engineers should understand the efficiency Impacts that may come from implementing certain advanced Interaction techniques Reviews of the past focused on the properties of techniques, did not compare effectiveness WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 3of 10

  4. PastREVIEWS “A Review and Taxonomy of Distortion-Oriented Presentation Techniques,” Leung & Apperley, 1994 “Graph Visualization and Navigation in Information Visualization: A Survey” Herman,Melançon, and Marshall, 2001 “Image-Browser Taxonomy and Guidelines for Designers” Plaisant, Carr, Schneiderman, 1995 First broad review of ‘distortion oriented’ techniques Technique and task taxonomy, Design suggestions Survey & Review of graph Visual and nav. techniques Example fisheye view 3D Cone tree 3 level browser WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 4 of 10

  5. Overview + DETAIL • Concurrently Displays the overview and detail view in a separate space of information • Actions performed in one view reflected in the other • Heavily used technique in several of today’s interfaces WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 5 of 10 www.totalydarkpowerpointtemplate.com

  6. Zooming • Ability to magnify objects for focus or zoom out or de-magnify to gain more understanding and greater context • Heavily used in many computer applications, several tricks to do so • Semantic zoom used in windows 8 to jump through large sections of content, the semantic view continues to show contextual and meaningful information when zoomed in or out • Windows 8 semantic zoom feature WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 6of 10

  7. Focus + Context • Focus and context integrated into display with all parts visible, but the focused area is display seamlessly within the greater context • Information that lies outside of the focus area is diminished • Fisheye views are an example • May present challenges in acquiring the correct target WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 7of 10

  8. Cue - BASED • Modifies how objects render in an information space, depending on if and how they are expected to appear in a display • Can be used together with any of the other aforementioned techniques • Typically used together with search criteria to draw or avert user attention WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 8of 10

  9. Empirical Evaluation Low Level Findings High Level Findings • Pan+Zoom can be removed in favor of a fully zommed in our out view, as thishas evidence of being more effective • Combination of overview+detail with pan+zoom was shown to be the fastest aid with visual search • The efficiency of target acquisition is well represented in this group of studies • Fisheye view use with documents encourage quicker reader but at the cost of clear comprehension • Overview+detail favored over fisheye for docs when it comes to comprehension • Fisheye views allow for multiple focal points • Overview + detail better than zooming for tasks that include extracting information WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 9of 10

  10. QUESTIONS How comprehensive was this review? Is it helpful to someone looking to design a user interface today? Should the authors have included more comparison experiments to compare to those reviewed? Did you enjoy this paper? What was your favorite technique to read about? Do you have any other questions? Thanks! WE ARE CURRENTLYHERE 10of 10
