Feudalism (social/political) Manorialism/Manor Systems (economic) • Kings/Lords • provide a fief (land) to vassals in exchange for loyalty • Vassals • take an Oath of Fealty in exchange for land (fief) • Social structure of feudalism • based on a concrete hierarchy • Economic system, based upon the manor, that is designed to work within the hierarchy of Feudalism • Europe is unsafe (lacks strong central government) • Self-sufficient community • Based primarily on agriculture (farming)

  5. Manor System • Lord/King • Head of manor • Creates rules, laws, punishments, etc. • Serfs • Agricultural worker (farmer) • “tied” to the land • NOT slaves = can’t be bought or sold
