  4. Cooperative Learning Groups – Presenter, Recorder, Time Keeper, and Facilitaor – Chapter One, Groups 1-2 • Important facts about Cole’s past are included in the first chapter. Use this information and some speculative thinking to explain whyCole’s problems with the law were chronic, Cole hated his parents,Cole’s parents were divorced, Cole had no feelings of remorse for injuring Peter Driscal. Cole thought of Circle Justice as a game he could play, Cole hated to be touched, Cole didn’t trust people who were not afraid of him, and Cole thought all the concern for him was false. • The author wrote Overhead, a gray-matted sky hung like a bad omen. Based on the foreshadowing planted by the author, predict the general nature of Cole’s immediate future. Does it seem that the author is predicting doom for Cole, or is he letting the reader know that Cole is in for a struggle? Explain your answer.

  5. Cooperative Learning Groups – Presenter, Recorder, Time Keeper, and Facilitator – Chapter 2, Groups 3-4 • Cole thought of the shelter and the boxes of supplies as just another payout by his father and other people who pretended to take care of him when they hadn’t done anything. In what way(s) has Cole’s father “bought” his son’s problems, just as Cole suspected? What facts from the story can you offer to prove that Cole’s parents actually were concerned about what happened to him? Who would you name as someone with a genuine interest in Cole’s future? Was there more than one person? Give facts to support your answers. • Explain how each of the following statements is an example of a show of bravado on Cole’s part. to Garvey “ . . . if you’re lying, you’ll be sorry. of a bear making a den beside the stream: “I’d kill it.”“If I saw a Spirit Bear, I’d kill it.”“Aren’t you guys ever leaving?”of the Circle committee “I told them I wanted to change. What more do they want?” of his bloody knuckles: “I fell. . . I hurt them falling.” What would you identify as the driving force—fear, hurt, anger, etc—behind each statement?Explain how Cole’s bravado helps him survive.Explain how Cole’s bravado is destroying him.

  6. Cooperative Learning Groups – Presenter, Recorder, Time Keeper, and Facilitator – Chapter 2, Groups 3-4 • The at.óow that Garvey gave to Cole had images of a totem pole woven into it. How was the blanket special to Garvey?Speculate as to why Garvey chose this particular gift for Cole.Do you think Cole deserved the gift? Why or why not? Cole thought of his agreement to choose Circle Justice over jail as a game. • Can you name someone, other than Cole, who knows there is a game going on? Explain your thinking.Describe some of the strategies that Cole is using to play his game. What argument can you offer to prove that Cole will not be able to win? How are the shelter and Cole’s decision to destroy it symbolic of what is going on in Cole’s life?
