What is a Hernia? In simple language hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall, through which the abdominal contents like intestine, omentum (intra- abdominal fat) or other organ protrude or bulge out forming a swelling. Usually the swelling increases on straining, coughing, walking and causes discomfort.
Types of Hernia There are many different types of hernia depending upon the site of hernia and cause of hernia. The common ones are the inguinal and femoral hernia presenting as swelling in the groins, umbilical hernia presenting as swelling at the navel (belly button) and incisional hernia occurring at the site of previous surgery. The umbilical and incisional hernias are clubbed together as ventral hernias and have similar surgical treatment.
Hiatus Hernia The hiatus is an opening in the diaphragm -- the muscular wall separating the chest cavity from the abdomen. Normally, the esophagus (food pipe) goes through the hiatus and attaches to the stomach. In a hiatus hernia (also called hiatal hernia) the stomach bulges up into the chest through that opening.
Symptoms of Hiatus Hernia Heartburn Sudden regurgitation Belching Throat irritation Abdominal discomfort
Hiatus Hernia • It is most common in overweight middle-aged women and elderly people. • It can occur during pregnancy. • The diagnosis is confirmed by barium meal X-rays or by passing a tube with a camera on the end into the stomach (gastroscopy).
Precautions Avoid smoking. Take antacid. Avoid spicy food. Avoid hot drinks. Avoid gassy drinks. Losing weight nearly always cures it. Eating small meals each day instead of 2 or 3 large ones helps.
Causes Any condition that increases the pressure of the abdominal cavity may contribute to the formation or worsening of a hernia. Obesity Heavy lifting Coughing Chronic ling disease Fluid in the abdominal cavity Hereditary Straining during a bowel movement or urination
Symptoms The most common symptom of hiatus hernia is heartburn, the burning discomfort produced in the lower central chest by refluxing stomach acid irritating the lower esophagus, which lacks the protective mucous lining of the stomach. Other symptoms, which vary from person to person, can include: food regurgitating into the mouth a bitter taste bad breath coughing
Diagnosis Testing will likely be required to confirm the diagnosis of hiatus hernia, and to rule out other possible reasons for the symptoms. These tests can include an upper GI series or a gastroscopy. The upper GI series consists of the patient drinking a liquid that coats the walls of the esophagus and stomach. This drink contains barium, which shows up as bright white on X-rays, providing a contrasting picture of the shape and function of the upper GI tract during the X-ray. During a gastroscopy, the physician inserts a hollow, flexible tube with a tiny light and video camera into the patient’s body via the mouth, to allow for a close-up view of the esophagus and stomach
