  1. 1 Nephi 19-22 Redeemer of Israel—6

  2. Large plates vs Small plates What was on the large plates, or the Book of Lehi? (1 Nephi 19:1-2; 1 Nephi 9:4) What was on the small plates? (1 Nephi 19:3-6; 6:3-6) Were the large and small plates being written side-by-side or simultaneously? (1 Nephi 19:5; 2 Nephi 5:28-33) How might that change what the small plates contain? Nephi, after thirty years, chose to include on these small plates a time when he read Isaiah passages to his brothers (19:22-24) rather than wars with his brothers (9:4; 2 Nephi 5:34)?????

  3. How Important are the Writings of Isaiah? • 3 Nephi 23:1* • Mormon8:23—Mormon’s endorsement • 2 Nephi 25:5—Nephi glories in Isaiah • 3 Nephi 20:11—Christ commands us to search Isaiah • 1 Nephi 19:23*

  4. “that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer” (1 Nephi 19:23)

  5. 1 Nephi 20:1-12 • Was baptism an ordinance had among the Jews as part of the law of Moses? • What does verse two mean? Can you re-write verse 2 for modern Israel? • In verses 3-12 the Lord is addressing somebody with “thee” and “thou” and “thy”. Who is this? Is it an individual?

  6. 1 Nephi 21:1-10, 14-16 • These verses are written in the first person—”I”, “my”, “me”. Who is speaking here? Is it Isaiah? He is the one writing it. But is this passage about him? • Look over the following ‘Messianic’ verses that are written in the first person—1 , 2, 4, 5, 9-10, 15-16—stopping after each verse to discuss how they apply to the Messiah.

  7. The Redemption of Israel (1 Nephi 21:15, 20-23) • Laman and Lemuel struggled to understand these verses (22:1) so Nephi explained them (22:3-12). Use Nephi’s teachings to help you understand the Isaiah passage. • Who are the children in these verses? • Why is Israel surprised in 21:21? • What is this prophecy about the Gentiles bringing sons in theirs arms and daughters on their shoulders?

  8. Great are the words of Isaiah (3 Nephi 23:1) • Do you agree?
