Instructional Ideas • Grade Range 2-8 • Theme: How lucky you are! • Genre: Fiction and Poetry • Instructional Application: This book may be used in the classroom as a Social Skills lesson to teach appreciation, or around the holidays (e.g. St. Patrick’s or Thanksgiving time) • Diversity: Children can compare the very different and absurd environments and the problems of some of the creatures the old man describes to themselves. They most likely will find that like the boy in the book they are quite lucky.

  3. How can you feel Lucky! • “When you think things are bad, when you feel sour and blue, when you start to get mad….you should do what I do!”

  4. What Can You Do? • “Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re really quite lucky! Some people are much more…oh, ever so much more….oh, muchly much-much more unlucky than you!”

  5. For example, an absurd situation…. • ….And you’re so, so, So lucky, you’re not a left sock, left behind my mistake in the Kaverns of Krock!

  6. Or suppose…. • Or suppose you lived in France and you couldn’t escape from the pants-eating-plants!!

  7. What if you were… • Or you were Hairy Haddow, a guy with no shadow • Or you were Mr. Potter, and you worked as a T-crosser and I-dotter

Purpose of Book • Gives kids and adults of all ages inspiration by creating laughable situations and asking them "Aren't you so lucky you aren't in this situation?" • Young readers can discuss appreciation for what they’ve got! • Another fun engaging reading resource that may be used to compare themselves to the fictional characters in these eye-catching illustrations.
