  1. FRBR: toward some practicalexperimentation in ELAG? ELAG Seminar, Prague, 6 June 2001 FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  2. ELAG FRBR I. Context Susanna Peruginelli, Florence, January 2000: "not only of a high theoretical value, but also a practical one; making it possible to integrate digital resources with "traditional" material" FRBR = FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  3. I. Context • Implementation problems? Experimentation is required! • Cataloguers’ comfort • (catalogue production devices) • Users’ comfort • (OPAC devices) FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  4. I. Context A new database  New data to feed it  Paula Goossens’ Guidelines Principles: • New creations • No MARC structure • Just XML FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  5. I. Context • 4 bibliographic families so far •  not enough! • They exist only on paper… • Here are three of them: FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  6. II. Three examplesa) a "unicellular" family (a very common case, especially for National Bibliographic Agencies) FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  7. W "Ma vie: 1912-1980" FRBNW001 E "Ma vie: 1912-1980" only available version FRBNW001-E001 M "Ma vie: 1912-1980" only available publication (1998) FRBNM001 I BNF 1999-53277 FRBNM001-I001 FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  8. a) a "unicellular" family: comments • Much redundancy: the same title three times! • Cataloguers shouldn’t have to type the same data several times • Once they’ve typed the title of a work, the catalogue production system should provide them with a "by default" proposal: Title of Manifestation = Title of Expression = Title of Work which they would change only when necessary FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  9. II. Three examplesb) "Boris Godunov" The Pushkin play, the libretto, the opera, etc… FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  13. III. Future developments • More than just 4 bibliographic families • Are there any volunteers? • A place, a computer, a software, and the database is done! • An opportunity: the VisualCat structure from the Danish Bibliographic Centre (thanks to Poul Henrik Jørgensen!) FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  14. III. Future developments • Two main focuses: • Ergonomics of the catalogue production system • OPAC issues FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?

  15. IV. Some reflections on OPACs Last year Dan Matei said: "We must get rid of traditional "Author / Title / Subject" OPACs!" • Would it really benefit our patrons? • How could this be achieved? A proposal (not an answer!): FRBR: toward some practical experimentation in ELAG?
