What is a Single Replacement Reaction? • In a single-replacement reaction, atoms of an element replace the atoms of a second element in a compound.
The Simple Definition of a Single Replacement Reaction • 1 element from the left side swaps places with another group on the other side to form the right sides elements.
Real Life Examples • An antacid (calcium hydroxide) neutralizes stomach acid (hydrochloric acid). Ca(OH)2 + 2 HCl CaCl2 + 2 H2O • An iron bar rusts. The iron reacts with oxygen in the air to make rust. 4 Fe + 3 O2 2 Fe2O3
Used in Daily Lives Thermite Reaction: • Fe2O3(s) + 2 Al(s) Al2O3(s) + 2 Fe(l) In the end this creates molten gas!
