  1. Graphic Communication: Colour Theory

  2. Read the following facts carefully so you have a better chance of answering the questions at the end…

  3. Primary Colours: Colours that work in combination to produce all the other colours. The 3 Primary Colours: Red Yellow Blue

  4. Secondary Colours: Colours that are made by mixing two primary colours in equal proportions. The 3 Secondary Colours: Green Orange Violet

  5. The Colour Wheel: The colour wheel was designed to show how all colours relate to each other. The outside ring shows all of the primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Tertiary Colours are primary and secondary Colours.

  6. Harmonising Colours: Colours beside each other on the colour wheel… For example: Red and Orange. Green and Yellow. Violet and Blue.

  7. Contrasting Colours: Colours on opposite sides of the colour wheel… For example: Red and Green. Violet and Yellow. Orange and Blue.

  8. Warm / Advancing Colours: Colours which evoke feelings of warmth. For example: Orange Yellow Red They are also called advancing because they appearcloser to the viewer than other colours. It does make rooms look smaller though as the walls look closer.

  9. Cool / Receding Colours: Colours which evoke feelings of cool. For example: Blue Green Violet They are also called recedingbecause they appear further away to the viewer than other colours. It does make rooms look bigger though as the walls look more distant.

  10. Tone: a tone of colour shows how strong or weak a colour is. By applying more coats of colour, the shade can be made stronger.

  11. Tints and Shades: Tints and shades are created by adding white or black to a colour. White is added to make a tint, and appear softer. Black is added to make a shade and appears heavier.
