  3. WHO IS VITUS BERING? Vitus Bering was born on August 12, 1681 in Denmark, Horsens. His father, Jonas Svend and his mother Anna Bering were proud of Vitus throughout his life. As he grew older he decided to join the Russian army as a navigator . He served the army for many years and than decided to become a explorer. On one of his many explorations he discovered Diomede Island and Kayak island. I do not know why he named the islands these probably because I do not speak French and I did live in his time period. But most importantly he discovered Alaska.

  4. WHY DID VITUS BERING EXPLORE ALASKA? Vitus Bering mainly explored Alaska because Peter the first ordered him to, but I bet he did it for the thrill alittle bit to. The strange thing is he was not looking for Alaska he was looking to see if America and Asia were connected. He did not find if they were connected but he did find Alaska which is a great discovery to. Something interesting I learned about Vitus Bering is that he had his own river named after him! PETER THE FIRST

  5. WHEN AND WHERE DID HE EXPLORE • Vitus Bering explored Alaska in 1740 when Peter the first sent him. It took him along time but he finally landed in Nome, Alaska. He explored most of Alaska but he didn’t even get the first step on Alaska soil. This surprised me because usually the captain gets the glory of the first step but either Vitus gave the step to him or he took it.

  6. HOW DID VITUS GET THERE AND BACK First of all Vitus Bering took the Clipper, Odyssey to Alaska and it held together the whole time and if you didn’t know the Clipper Odyssey is his boat. He had to avoid three different islands just to get to Alaska!

  8. AFTER WORDS On a different expedition his boat crashed and he was stranded but later died of scurvy on the island on December 19, 1741. Vitus was the first to map out Alaska And dock on it he will always be remembered even though he did not get the first step on Alaskan soil .
