We’re about learning… • Teaming – Core subject area teachers are assigned to the same group of students • Math, English/Language Arts, Science, Social Studies • Unified Arts – Art, Tech Ed, Music, PE/Health • Work together to meet the needs of their students • Common Core State Standards – PARCC • Revised Curriculum: • ELA – EngageNY • Social Studies – teachers worked over the summer on scope, sequence, and alignment • Math – Year 2 of Glencoe Text • Science – Gemsnet kits 13

The School Schedule • We follow a 6 period/6 day schedule (A-F days) • Each period is between 45 and 58 minutes in length • Students will have the following classes: • English, Math, Science, Social Studies (daily) • Unified Arts (1 trimester in length, every other day) Art, Technology Education, General Music • Health/Physical Education (every other day, 2/3 of the year PE, 1/3 of the year Health) • Academic Enrichment (daily for most students)

  17. Academic Enrichment All students will have academic enrichment every other day with their academic team. This period is designed to provide additional or extended learning experiences for students. It IS a learning period. Examples of activities include: • Reading activities • Make up work/extra help • Project completion • The design of this period is determined by the academic team.

Academic Growth and Support (AGS) • 30 minutes per day/4 times per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) • Purpose: • To provide Math and Reading intervention to those students who are below proficiency. • To provide meaningful enrichment opportunities to students who have demonstrated proficiency in Math and Reading

Grade Reporting Trimester Marking Periods Grades K - 8 Trimester 1 (8/28-11/25) = 61 Trimester 2 (11/26-3/11) = 61 Trimester 3 (3/12-6/12) = 60 Progress Reports: Will be given to every student at the mid point of each trimester. An email will be sent informing you of the date that the progress reports are distributed to the students. Report Cards: Distributed to students approximately within one week of the trimester ending. An email will be sent informing of the date that reports will be distributed to the students. 21

Morning Routine • The school day is 7:55am – 2:40pm • Breakfast is served beginning at 7:45am. • 6th Grade students will enter the building through the side door • Students are considered tardy to school if they are not in homeroom by 8:05 a.m. • Please refer to the Student Handbook to review Attendance Policy • Please call the absentee line at 333-6306 if your child is going to be tardy. • Students who are tardy are to report directly to the office to sign in.

Homeroom • 7:55am – 8:05am • Students go to lockers, announcements are read, attendance is taken • Grouped by team of teachers - your child’s homeroom teacher will be one of their team teachers. • Absences: Absentee line 333-6306 • Please refer to the Student Handbook to review the Attendance Policy • Excused vs. Unexcused absences • Teachers take attendance online in HR. • Early dismissal: Provide a note to homeroom teacher with the reason for the dismissal and time. We will call your child out of class when you arrive. 23

LUNCHES Checks should be made payable to “Cumberland School Department” Checks should be given to the cafeteria workers when going through the line Breakfast is from 7:40-7:55 a.m. (if interested or needed). Cost: $1.00 Three lunches by grade – rotates each day. Cost: $2.50 Students are assigned a PIN number (4 or 5 digits) and they enter it as the go through the cafeteria line Snacks may be also purchased with this money Besides the different daily hot meal, we always have pizza, burgers, salad, chicken patties, etc. Free/reduced lunch paperwork will be sent home the first day of school 24

Afternoon Routine • Students will be dismissed to their locker from their 6th period class. • Buses will leave NCMS at approximately 2:40pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. • Wednesday will be an early release day beginning September 4th. Students will be dismissed at 1:40pm. • Common planning, data review, professional development

  25. LATE BUSES We have two late bus days each week on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Late bus pick-up time is @ 3:30 p.m. Students must have a signed pass from the staff member with whom they stayed after in order to ride the late bus. 26

Conflict Resolution Procedure Problem Solving Protocol • Step 1 – If an issue is with an individual teacher, that teacher should be contacted first. • Step 2 – If satisfaction was not achieved, or if an issue concerns more than 1 teacher or a team of teachers, contact your child’s school counselor. • Step 3 – If satisfaction was not achieved in Steps 1 or 2, contact administration. The decision of the principal is the final decision at the building level. • Step 4 – If satisfaction was not achieved in Step 3 at the building level, an appeal can be made to the Cumberland Public Schools Central Administration. • Superintendent: Dr. Philip Thornton • Assistant Superintendent : Mr. Robert Mitchell • Principal: Mrs. Bethany Coughlin • Assistant Principal: Mrs. Kristy Patten 27

Communication • Parents are free to call the school and leave messages for teachers and/or school counselors in order to talk or schedule meetings 333-6306 • Meetings typically occur during a teachers’ common planning time or after school • Parents are also encouraged to email staff • Ex. Bethany Coughlin is bethany.coughlin@cumberlandschools.org • *See school website for proper spelling of names and all teacher emails: • List Serve-mail message from administration about once per week on Friday • Monthly parent coffee hour for open discussion (am/pm) • School Messenger managed by the school district for snow days/other announcements • Aspen Family Portal accessed through www.cumberlandschools.org • Twitter/Facebook • Parent Conference Nights will be scheduled after the first progress report has been distributed. 28
