Raw feeding for Cats and Dogs – a beginner’s guide… By Eric Gray (eric@spbr.org) 24 Sept 04
What we’ll discuss today… • Who I am • My feeding history • My present feeding • Diet observations • Further research • Next Steps • Nancy’s comments
Who I am… Proud guardian to three rescued pit bulls, Spud, Precious and Thor… plus some fosters…
My Rescue… Visit us at www.spbr.org
Some of my recent rescues.. Zoey Foxxy Redman
My feeding history • Adopted Spud in ’97 • Fed Dog Chow • In Spring 2001, noticed lumps on rear
What I discovered… • Great resources on the web for dogs with cancer (http://b-naturals.com/Sum1998.php) • “Dr. Ogilvie reports that tumors need glucose to live, which are simple sugars found in many carbohydrates. It gives energy to the tumor, and robs energy from the dog.”
Spud’s first raw meal (2002) • Ground chicken and veggies myself • Gave him diarrhea (too fatty) • Expensive and time-consuming • Relatively unsafe – temp fluctuations
My present feeding… • Oma’s Pride in Avon • Great variety, prices, and customer support • Rescue-friendly • 100% USDA inspected, convenient mixes • 100% natural
Staple diet – Oma’s mixes - • Poultry: • 70% meat/bone • 10% organ meats (liver/hearts/gizzards) • 20% vegetables chkn-(squash/broccoli/kale) trky-(grn bn,yel sq,okra) • Beef: • 70% Ground beef / bone • 10% organ meats (heart/liver/kidney) • 20% vegetables (squash/broccoli/kale) • Lamb: • 80% meat/bone • 20% vegetables (zuch,carrot,parsley)
Further research showed.. • Great raw resources on the web –http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm • A raw diet emulated early-dogs’ and wolves’ diets • The diet is 100% natural • If I were a carnivore, what would I want to eat?
