A/S Product Analysis Blocks of study Related to the analysis Designing and Innovation Product Analysis Materials and Components Industrial and Commercial Practice
A/S Product Analysis I want students to: • choose their own product for analysis • get to know the product in some depth • understand the implications of design decisions • apply the knowledge and understanding gained to other areas of specification
A/S Product Analysis Product Features ‘Above the line’ considerations Core Features Materials Function User interface Aesthetics Performance Ergonomics Ancillary Features Build Quality Economics Reliability Safety Similar products Maintenance Finish Packaging
A/S Product Analysis Product Features ‘Below the line’ considerations Core Features Technology Materials Manufacturing processes Assembly Components Function Ancillary Features Economics Quality Control Quality Assurance Reliability Construction Sustainability
A/S Product Analysis Product analysis will lead to • Re-Design of product • Further discussion
Marking the Product Analysis Research strategy • A well planned strategy reflecting positive thought and understanding of the product to be analysed.
Research strategy – 5 marks • Evidence of planning activity • Structured planning for the product analysis • Structure of content • Aims and objectives of the analysis • Knowledge of the specification content – where is it likely to appear
Effectiveness of strategy – 5 marks • A very high level of understanding revealed of the features and characteristics of the product.
Effectiveness of strategy • Aims and objectives facilitating the analysis • Was the planning material effective? • Is there a product overview? • Application of Specification content • Planned evaluation activities
Depth and breadth of understanding • A very good analysis of a product’s characteristics and features which contribute towards its function. • Comment on industrial and marketing practices used to produce and promote the product.
Depth and breadth of understanding • Quality of Application of Specification content within the analysis – / 2 marks • Above the line analysis – / 6 marks • Below the line analysis – / 12 marks
Depth and breadth of understanding • Above the line analysis – / 6 marks • Weak level of understanding of the product’s features (2 marks) • Good description and some comparisons of specification content contained within a good product analysis (4 marks) • Very good analysis of product and associated systems with clear reference to three aspects of the specification (6 marks)
Depth and breadth of understanding • Below the line analysis – / 12 marks • Weak level of understanding of the product’s features (4 marks) • Good description and some comparisons of specification content contained within a good product analysis (8 marks) • Very good analysis of product and associated systems with clear reference to three aspects of the specification (12 marks)
Personal comment – 10 marks • A detailed and incisive analytical study which could include development or improvement of the product with modifications and suggestions for further incremental improvement.
Personal comment • Analytical comment • Not simply descriptive of product • Evaluative comment including possible weaknesses/modifications • Aims and objectives used • Knowledge of Specification content • Weak Descriptive – 3 Good descriptive – 6 Good descriptive and Analytical – up to 10
Quality of report • An excellent product analysis, presented with care and pride in all details. • A very high level of graphical and written skills evident.
Quality of report – 10 marks • Quality of writing skills • Quality of graphic skills • Use of a range of media • Handwriting/ICT skills • Logical framework
A/S Product Analysis As a result of the product analysis candidates will be able to produce a graphic of the products features both: • ‘Above the line’ and • ‘Below the line’ • This may be submitted as part of the portfolio
