Classification. Branch of Biology that deals with classification and naming living things. Aristotle classified living things into only two categories—plants or animals. So why classify further? It provides organization and identification for studying organisms.

Branch of Biology that deals with classification and naming living things. • Aristotle classified living things into only two categories—plants or animals. • So why classify further? • It provides organization and identification for studying organisms. • Common names vary from place to place and many do not accurately define a species. • Example: jellyfish Taxonomy

  3. Devised a system of grouping organisms into hierarchical categories according to their form and structure. Binomial Nomenclature- system uses 2 names to identify an organism Genus and species Carolus Linnaeus: “Founder”

  4. Genus + species = Scientific name Homo sapiens or H. sapiens Drosophila melanogasteror D. melanogaster Canisfamiliarisor C. familiaris Carcarodoncarchariasor C. carcharias Can you guess these organisms

  5. Used to be 5 kingdoms when Eubacteria and Archbacteria were one kingdom called Monera 6-Kingdom system
