Axiomatic • Self-evident; universally accepted as true Example: • It’s axiomatic in politics that voters won’t throw out a current presidential candidate unless they think his challenger will clean house.
Crux • Most important point; essential part • Example: • Skip over the minor points and get to the crux of the matter.
Cogitate Think over; consider with care; ponder Example: Since the matter is important, I must have time to cogitate before announcing my decision.
Paradoxical Having the characteristics of a self-contradictory statement, which may nevertheless be true Example: It is paradoxical but true: students can teach a teacher.
Orthodox Generally accepted, especially in religion; conventional; approved Example: Boys are required to wear ties in schools, which insist on orthodox dress codes.
Indubitable • Certain; incontrovertible; indisputable • Example: • The defendant’s confession, added to the witnesses’ testimony, makes his guilt indubitable.
Heterodox • Rejecting regularly accepted beliefs or doctrines • Example: • Political rebels in dictatorships are often persecuted for their heterodox beliefs.
Fallible • Liable to be mistaken • Example: • Umpires occasionally make mistakes; like other human beings, they too are fallible.
Eclectic • Choosing ideas or methods from various sources • Example: • In some matters Odysseus follows Athena and in others he follows his instincts; he is an eclectic voyager.
Dogmatic Asserting opinions as if they were acts; opinionated; asserted without proof Example: If you keep saying the plan will not work without offering proof, you are being dogmatic.
