The Mini-Extended Essay Final Formal Touches: The Abstract, the Table of Contents, and the List of Works Cited
The Abstract “Within the abstract, the research question, the scope of the investigation and the conclusion reached are all clearly stated.” The above is the criterion descriptor for a 6/7 (in Organization) on your abstract. It should be no longer than 150 words.
A Sample Abstract The Ponzi scheme created by the corrupt genius of Bernie Madoff mocked the business world. This essay first explains what a Ponzi scheme is, why it was named the way it is, and when the first scam of this nature took place. It details how Charles Ponzi went from bankruptcy to becoming a millionaire, to ruins again. Bernie Madoff managed to repeat in a bigger way what Ponzi had done decades earlier—fool the authorities. How and why he did it and how his illegitimate venture eventually crumbled are central concepts in this essay. In essence, Madoff’s scheme demonstrated how corrupt, but also how entertaining and exhilarating the business world can be. (112 words)
The Table of Contents • The table of contents is one of the necessary components of Formal Presentation (part of the Conventions grade for the Mini-EE). • If your essay has sub-headings, your table of contents should simply use them as key elements. (See CJ’s essay for example.) • Essays in some subjects should not have sub-headings. Your table of contents still needs to break down sections of your essay and indicate page numbers.

List of Works Cited • MLA calls a bibliography a “List of Works Cited,” so that is the proper term since ECA uses MLA documentation. • The List of Works Cited is a required part of the Formal Presentation of your mini-EE and is assessed under “Conventions.” • In addition, Mrs. Lowman will check the quality of your sources for your Research grade.
More on the List of Works Cited • You should have at least five sources. • One of those sources should be a “book source.” • (Several of you inquired whether a PDF or another published source online would be acceptable, and in most cases I gave permission. BUT an actual printed source was what I had in mind—just for the learning experience.)
