  2. What is a desert. Deserts occupy one fifth of the planet. They are known for their extremely dry climate. Only a specific group of plants and animals can maintain life in a desert due to the extreme weather conditions. Hot and Cold deserts are both classified under this biome. Cold deserts are located at higher altitudes and hot deserts are located at very low altitudes.
