  1. Safety Zone Comparisons- Arizona Night Shift • Designated Safety Zone in Arizona. • Fuel Type: Pinion/Juniper • Assignment: Direct Line Situation: Fires cold and crews working nightshift, SZ’s Identified while seen in daylight. All open line with little to no fire behavior expected.

  2. Safety Zone Comparisons-Vehicle Parking • Designated Safety Zone in So. Cal. For vehicle parking and personnel. • Fuel Type: Brush & Grass • Assignment: IA LA County IA for LA County, fires is active and in the heat of the day. Vehicles you see in picture are just arriving for IA.

  3. Safety Zone Comparisons-Vehicle Parking • Designated Safety Zone in Colorado. • Fuel Type: Pinion/Juniper • Assignment: Line construction/Mop-up Mop-up shift for fire in Colorado. Winds were expected and surfaced later in the day.

  4. Safety Zone Comparisons-Burned Out Meadows • Designated Safety Zone in So. Cal. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Line construction/Mop-up Wilderness fire in the San Bernardino mountains. Burnt meadow above was one of many identified for SZ’s.

  6. Safety Zone Comparisons- Burned Out Meadow • Designated Safety Zone in Idaho. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Active Fire SZ identified by Squad Boss for small contingent of hotshot crew performing spot fire duties. SZ was a green meadow.

  7. Safety Zone Comparisons- Green Meadow • Designated Safety Zone in Montana. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Line construction, hold to creek. Green meadow was identified on shift plan for use but was not used due to the meadows burning this year as seen in previous picture.

Safety Zone Comparisons- Identify and Prep • Designated Safety Zone in California. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Indirect/Prep for firing • Before and After SZ’s designated by hotshot crew and were placed every 1/8 of a mile or as needed for burn out operations. Numerous resources were involved.

  9. Safety Zone Comparisons- Burn Prep • Designated Safety Zone in Montana. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Indirect/Prep for firing Prep for burnout in drainage bottom. Had Dozer Boss ID SZ’s and have put in. Checked on work being done and made changes. Not adequate!

  10. Safety Zone Comparisons- Look Out Spot • Designated Safety Granite Rock. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Line Construction Designated look out was on top of granite dome. Fire behavior picked up in afternoon chasing look out off on rock.

  11. Safety Zone Comparisons- Mechanized • Designated Safety Zone in Arizona. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Hot line SZ designated by hotshot crew built in advance with Dozers. Assignment was cut direct line but spotted and blew out and crew had to go into SZ with airtanker support.

  12. Safety Zone Comparisons- Rock Outcroppings • Designated Safety Zone in Montana. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Indirect Line Rock outcroppings have been used often in the past, but since 30-Mile rock outcroppings should be reconsidered.

  13. Safety Zone Comparisons- Staging Area as SZ? • Designated Safety Zone in New Mexico. • Fuel Type: Timber • Assignment: Burn out Operation with engine support. This staging area was Identified by a Division Supt. To be a SZ.

  14. Safety Zone Comparisons- SZ in New Mexico? • Designated Safety Zone in New Mexico. • Fuel Type: PJ • Assignment: Burn out Operation planned/Indirect line. SZ was designated by hotshot crews and built with dozers in anticipation of a burnout show that was never done.

SZ was designated by hotshot crews and put in with dozers in anticipation of a burnout show that was implemented with engine and air support.
