Overview of the WZ Safety Grant Program • Sect 1409 SAFETEA-LU nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations to provide training to prevent and reduce work zone injuries and fatalities: • Area 1. Construction worker training • Area 2. Guideline development • Area 3. Guideline training for State and local governments, transportation agencies, and other groups. • 4 years and subject to the Federal-aid highway obligation limitation. The Federal share is 80%.

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY Key areas- • State-of-the-art/practice policy review • Gap study and needs assessment of existing utility wz guidelines and training. • Develop utility wz safety guidelines and a national level utility wz worker safety training program curriculum.
ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY • Amount: $750K • Key Staff: Dr. Jonathan Shi, Z Li; Mark Snyder • Time: 2 years + 2 option years • Focus areas: 2 and 3 • Key area – Work Zone Safety Audits
ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY • Audits qualitatively estimate potential road safety issues and identify improvement opportunities • Dan Ryan Reconstruction project - initial case study • Develop WZ Safety Audit Training Program
