College-Going Initiative (CGI) Partnership Central Themes • Create a college-going culture for students, parents, and community • Increase A-G completion rates • Increase college admission, application, and enrollment rates • Increase viable career goals through high school health academies • Increase collaboration between pre-collegiate and higher education partners

  10. Academy 21 Primary Goals • Increase 8th and 9th grade academic performance • Increase awareness of viable career options • Increase the number of students, particularly those in underserved populations, who enroll in higher education

Academy 21Highlights • 86% of Lake and Mendocino County students indicated that “they believe they will be better prepared for school as a result of the summer academy.” • The percentage of students able to correctly identify the definition of A-G courses increased from 34% (prior to academy) to 65% (after academy). • 70% students had not visited a college campus prior to the academy. 100% visited at least one college campus by the end of the academy. • MDTP scores showed growth in the areas of equations, geometric measurements, and integers.

National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) • Mission: To bring various professions to life, empowering outstanding young people with confidence to make well-informed career choices. • Programs in 8 cities throughout the US: law, medicine and national security • NYLF scholars must demonstrate strong academic abilities, leadership, and an interest in the career field being studied • UCSF gave 8 full-ride scholarships to Lake/Mendo students in 08-09

  19. Higher Education Week • “Traveling College Fair” for rural Lake/Mendo • CCC, CSU, UC, Private, and Vocational Schools • Day events for Juniors, Seniors, AVID and Academy students, including table time and break-out sessions • Evening events open to the public (including transfer students)

  20. University Admittance Reception • Dinner program to honor students and their families who have been accepted to a four-year college (including transfer students) • Attended by college representatives, HS counselors, principals, community members • 280 in attendance at this event in 2009
