  2. What is immigration? • Immigration- the act of coming to permanently live in another country • People immigrated to Utah to find better lives for their families and bigger opportunities • Mormons were among the immigrants to Utah for religious freedom

  3. How did the Mormons end up in Utah? Members of the LDS church were gathered in Nauvoo, Illinois, where they were persecuted for their beliefs. They wanted to live peacefully so they left Nauvoo for Salt Lake City. They traveled along “The Mormon Trail” between 1847 and 1869. There were many hardships because they had to leave a lot behind and didn’t have much food. Many people got very sick and did not make it to Utah. When the pioneers got to Utah, they had to work hard to create a life for themselves. Brigham Young set up their city and they built the Salt Lake Temple as a place of worship.

  4. If you were an immigrant… • What would you pack and why? • What would stay behind? • Who would come with you? • How would you travel? • What would some challenges be that you might face?

  5. What students will do • “I’m going on an immigration” • Create your own immigration. This includes a limited list of what you will bring and why, who is coming with you, and how you will travel. • Create a map of your “Mormon Trail” • Write 5 journal entries about your journey and trials: illness, injury, lack of food, etc. • Sketch a picture of your final destination
