EMAS AND TOURISM • EMAS can help tourism facilities to improve their environmental performances and communicate about it • Tourism, incl. hotels & restaurants = 5th EMAS sector • 200 tourism organisations now joined EMAS • Prominently in Spain & Germany and growing in Italy • Some hotel chains applying EMAS: - Sol Melià, - Garden Hotels, - Occidental Hotels, - Elitor, - Iberostar, - Acorn - Paradores de Tourismo

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN EUROPE • Tourism = 5% of EU GDP • Hotels, resorts • Beaches, local infrastructure, transport • Recreational facilities • Travel agencies, transport companies • Tourism requires unspoilt environment to operate • In times of mass tourism, environmentally sound tourism offers a Unique Selling Point Collective impact on the environment

EXAMPLE 1 • 72 out of 90 Spanish Paradores EMAS registered • Chain of public hotels in historic locations • Actions taken: • treatment of waste oil, waste toners & waste batteries, volume reduction in toxic waste • Single-control taps, water-saving tanks for toilets, low consumption lamps, double glazing windows • Promote environmental knowledge to tourists through brochures, exhibitions, info panels, etc

  5. EXAMPLE 2 • German Lake Constance cruise ship company • Lake Constance Europe’s largest resource drinking water • Oil consumption 16 vessels reduced by 15 % • Reduction of detergents for the cleaning of the ships by 50 % • Achieved 100% recycled paper

EXAMPLE 3 • Terceira Mar Hotel – Azores Island - Portugal • Near historical UNESCO World Heritage City Angra de Heriosmo • Actions: • Refrigerated storeroom for organic residues • Rain water reservoir for garden irrigation • Wasterwater pumping station for municipal sewerage • Technical management center to monitor energy consumption
