Regional Meeting Heads of Statistics and Planning Noumea, 12-16 July

Culture Statistics • Culture as a key driver of development • Work through and with the Council of Pacific Arts and Culture • Mapping the future of culture and its potential to enhance and sustain economic development in the Pacific • 5 areas of work • Key to this meeting is area 1) development of technical tools to value and measure the economic, political and social contributions of culture to development • Note page 2 of information paper

  4. Work to date • Using the Census and HIES • Involvement of culture focal points in country to join national task forces for these national statistical exercise • Using the development indicators initiative • Providing technical assistance

Gender Statistics • Improving institutional capacity on gender statistics – responding to country requests. • SPC’s core mandate is to help strengthen national institutional capacity for integration of gender as a critical cross-cutting issue in all aspects of development and governance. • Work began in 2006; making progress but slow; multi-year programme. • To improve the collection, reporting, analysis and use of statistics on men and women in the Pacific; provide national women’s machineries and other data users with the skills required to use gender indicators to influence national policies and programmes and to monitor and evaluate progress towards gender equality.

  7. For meeting to consider: • Ways in which this work can be supported at both regional and at country level. • At country level to include culture, gender and youth focal points in taskforces for census and other national statistical collections. • Recognise the limited capacity in these social statistical areas with CROP and at country level and address these capacity issues in regional and national support plans; and donor support programmes.
