Austin’s Newest Semiconductor Investments • Samsung Electronics Co.—world’s second largest chip maker—announced that the company will build a new 300mm fabrication facility and create nearly 1,000 new jobs in Austin—expected $3.5-$4 billion investment is the largest single investment of a foreign company in the U.S. • Advanced Micro Devices—global technology company with a 25-year history in Austin—constructing a new, 60-acre campus in SW Austin, doubling its existing office space and affirming its long-term commitment to the Greater Austin region. • Freescale Semiconductor—global leader in the design and manufacture of semiconductors—became a publicly traded company in 2004 after 50 years as a part of Motorola—selected Austin for its HQ despite fierce competition from other regions around the world—the headquarters employs 6,000 in Austin. • Spansion—largest semiconductor company dealing exclusively in flash memory manufacturing and solutions—employs some 1,000 people in Austin—invested over $500 million in upgrades to its Austin fab over the past three years.
