3. The Historian • As a historian, you are traveling to London this summer to learn about Shakespeare. You travel dates must be 10 days within June, July, or August 2013. • You have a budget of $5000 for everything, so plan wisely and don’t forget to factor in the exchange rate! • 1. You must create an itinerary (list) for your trip that includes all of the following: • Plane tickets (dates of travel, airport you’re leaving from/going to in London, cost of tickets, airline) • How are you going to get around? (Rental car, bus, taxi, subway?) Find the cost for the one you choose. • 10 days of accommodation (what does this include? breakfast, other amenities). You do not have to stay in one place! • Find tickets to at least one Shakespeare play (include name of play, price, and theater) • Visit the New Globe Theater (price? Find information about it to put in your brochure) • Visit at least 2 other sites associated with Shakespeare and find information about them to put in your brochure • How much money will you need/do you have for meals? • Any leftover money for souvenirs or are you broke?

4. The Historian cont. •  2. You had such a nice trip that you decide to create one of the following to share with other historians who may want to travel to London: •  Create a travel brochure using all of the information from above (good airline to fly, place(s) to stay, sites to see, exchange rate info). A good brochure will include color graphics and text that is easy to understand and is appealing for the reader. • Create a PowerPoint presentation using all of the above information. You must have at least 5 slides, not including your introduction page.

5. The Alchemist • You have the task of learning about the Science of the Renaissance. Use the internet and books to answer the following: • What did scientists of the Renaissance (late 1400s to early 1600s) believe the elements were and what did they believe about them? • What did people believe about science? Choose 2-3 specific beliefs to research and explain. • What is alchemy? • All questions and answers should be typed, double space and answers should be in YOUR OWN WORDS. • To complete your task choose one of the following options: • Develop a poster comparing past and present science using words and graphics. • Create a PowerPoint presentation comparing past and present science. You should have a minimum of 5 slides, not including an introduction page. • Finally, for all alchemists, write a one-page essay (typed) answering the question: How would I explain the atom to someone in the 16th century?

6. The Artist • As an artist, your job is to create a comic book or graphic “novel” about one of the acts in the play. Each page of your comic book should have multiple boxes and each box should include text from the play. • Choose one of the options below for your comic book. All comics must be in color and hand drawn. No stick figures—no exceptions! • For a grade of A: • Choose one act from the play and use the exact dialogue from Shakespeare in your text boxes. Not all dialogue needs to be used, however, you must use the most important dialogue in your comic. • Choose one act, but represent the play symbolically, still using Shakespeare’s dialogue in text boxes. (Run your idea by Mrs. Weber before you begin this). • For a grade of B: • Choose three scenes from one act in the play. • For a grade of C: • Choose two scenes from one act in the play. • For a grade of D: • Choose one scene from one act in the play.

7. The Actor • Your task is to discover what it was like to be an actor in Shakespeare’s company. • The following is a list of what you will need to do to complete your task: • 1. Using reliable sources (internet and books) research the question above. • 2. After collecting your information type up answers to the following questions (double space). Each answer should be at least one good paragraph and must be in YOUR OWN WORDS. Do not simply copy down the answers from the websites. • How did people live in 16th century London? • How were actors treated or thought of? • What were the roles of men and women in acting? • Act out a scene from Romeo and Juliet for the class. Be sure to get the scene that you chose approved by Mrs. Weber before you begin practicing. All lines must be memorized and include the use of props and costumes in your act. You may have a partner/partners for the acting only; however be aware that each person must say at least 10 lines. All lines must be memorized. • In addition, you must create a staging plan (either drawn or 3-D) showing where each actor should be standing, and where props and lighting should be used.

8. The Athlete and Gamer • As an athlete, it is your job to discover what sports and games were played during Shakespeare’s time. • Research and answer the following questions: • What were the sports of the Renaissance? Were the “athletes” paid or did they only play for fun? • What games were popular at this time? Write a one-page paper summarizing your findings. • Choose one of the following: • Recreate one of the games from this time and teach the class to play. • OR Recreate a 3D scene of an athletic competition.

9. The Critic • The Critic loves Shakespeare. You need to write a critical paper about the play. The following is your prompt. You will need to familiarize yourself with literary terms used in Shakespeare. • Prompt: 3-5 page essay • What did you like and dislike about the play? Choose one character and explain how they reacted in a situation and how you would have reacted if you were in that situation. (Use details from the play!) Next, choose at least 3 literary terms used in the play and explain how they were used to enhance the writing, drama, etc. • This is a difficult prompt; therefore, if you choose to write this paper, I expect high level writing, no grammatical or spelling errors, and that you will turn in at least two rough drafts along with your final typed paper using MLA format.
