PRESIDENCY – what it is about? • Presidency = neutral, “honest broker”, search for compromises • Leading negotiation in over 200 EU Council Working Groups  over 3000 meetings per Presidency in Bxl or Capital • Cca 30 ministerial EU Council meetings • Cca 10 informal EU Council meetings • Over 100 meetings with third countries • Representation of the EU Council vis-a-vis EC and EP • Representation of the EU vis-a-vis IGOs and third countries

  4. 18-month program • Replaces operational and strategic programs • Introduced in order to ensure greater continuity of the EU policies  Improvement of the European governance  efforts of SI Presidency • Prepared by D, PT, SI and Council Secretariat and the EC • 3 parts (strategic framework; priorities, comprehensive program) • The basis for SI 6-month program (NB: around 90% of all dossiers inherited!)

Possible priorities of SI Presidency • Debate on the Future of Europe • Enlargement, Western Balkans, the ENP • Culture and intercultural dialog • Energy • Lisbon strategy • Competitiveness, transfer of innovations • Environment protection – climate change and biodiversity • The role of the EU as a global player NB: possible changes due to the dynamic EU legislative process  final list of priorities can be identified only towards the end of the D Presidency!
