  3. Recruitment and Selection Bellwork Put the stages of the Recruitment and Selection process in the right order: Interview Job vacancy Apply for job using a CV or application form. Job vacancy Create a Job description & person specification Appoint new employee. (sign contract of employment) Put a job advert in the newspaper.

The Job Description Before a business can advertise for new staff it must create job description which describes what the job involves, E.g: Job Title: Receptionist Duties: Answering telephone, dealing with mail, organising meetings for management, letter writing and filing. Responsible for: 1 junior trainee. Responsible to: Production manager. Location: Cramlington office. Hours: 37 ½ per week Create a job description for a job of your choice.

  7. Types of Training • Induction Training: • Done when a new person starts working. This will include: • Introduction and tour of the business • Meeting colleagues / Health & Safety etc • Introduction to the job On the Job Training: This is the most common form of training. The new employees will be shown how to do the job by someone already in that position. Sometimes departments also hold training courses, e.g. Telephone skills in a call centre Off the job Training: Training that takes place away from the business – often done by an external business. For example: ICT course at a college. Full Time & Part Time Courses: This is usually longer term training. Part Time includes Day release and evening courses. Full Time is training entirely away from the workplace e.g. studying for A-Level or a Degree. Benefits of training? Training Multi Choice Activity

Trade Unions Activity: Identify 3 things that Trade Unions do. • Take care of their members. • Help solve disputes between management & the worker. • Negotiate better working conditions. • Negotiate higher pay and more entitlements. • Represent the worker if they have been treat badly. • Provide Training and Legal advice

  10. Industrial Action If the Trade Union does not get what it wants it can take industrial action. Task: explain what each of the following are:

Answers • To strike: Workers stop working and leave the building, costing the business a lot of money through lost production. • To Picket: Workers stand close to the factory gate and try to persuade other workers not to go in. • To Go-slow: Workers will deliberately work slowly • To Work to Rule: Workers will only do the very minimum of what is in their contract & will not be helpful to requests. • Overtime ban: Workers will not do any additional work.

  14. Maslow’s: Hierarchy of Needs Maslow identified a range of needs that individuals seek to be met in life and at work. Am I everything I could be? Are my abilities being fully challenged? i.e. its all about personal development SELF FULFILLMENT People achievements. need self & peer respect. To be recognised, achieving status, and rewarded for good work. SELF ESTEEM NEEDS People need affection & love. Most people want to feel part of a group. GROUP NEEDS or Love & belonging. Still survival but at work this might include, physical safety, job security, adequate rest, pensions & sick schemes etc SAFETY or SECURITY NEEDS Food, shelter, clothing to survive. At work this simply means enough money to get by. BASIC NEEDS

  15. Non Financial Motivators • There are many ways that businesses can motivate their workers without it costing them more. The main methods include: • Team working • Job Enrichment • Job Enlargement • Job Rotation • Praise & Recognition • Promotion Task: Match the non financial motivator to its description.
