Survey’s purpose • A statewide survey project to understand how homelessness, hunger and healthcare affect the lives of our State’s low income residents. • To gather statistics to be used in a survey report which will help shape MASW’s policy priorities for 2008.

Use of the survey • To create a report for MASW members, MO food banks and food pantries, and MO legislators. • To use the statistics and stories to illustrate and validate our 2008 policy priorities.
2008 MASW Policy Priorities • MASW every year sets policy priorities. • Each Task Force has it’s policy goals • Organization as a whole has it’s policy priorities • Use these to advocate for legislation and policy that help the low income Missourians.

Findings: Hunger The Goal: Increase State and Federal support for nutrition assistance to those in need. Of those that receive Food Stamps Food Stamps get them through the whole month Food Stamps run out --They feed family as well as they would like --They Don’t feed family as well as they would like --Skipped question
Findings: Hunger The Goal: Educate area community members about the Food Stamps program. Does your household receive food stamps? YES- receive Food Stamps NO- don’t receive Food Stamps Did not answer
Findings: Hunger The Goal: Work for the passage of Supplemental Food Stamps for Seniors, and lift ban on Food Stamps for ex-drug offenders. 13%- said they were only getting $10, or they were told they would only get $10 6% - were denied Food Stamps due to drug felony
Findings: Hunger The Goal: Increase fruit and vegetable assistance programs -- Said the reason they do not eat more fresh fruits and vegetables is because they are too expensive -- Said another reason why they do not eat more fresh fruits and vegetables ( ex. No access or don’t like them)
Findings: Healthcare The Goal: Support legislation that increases the number of people in Missouri who have access to health care. **49.7% of people that have health insurance, can’t afford the co-pays
Findings: Healthcare The Goal: Support the Institute of Medicine’s principles for health care reform, and expands these to include oral health. Visits to a dentist - -Have not gone/ do not go - -Go only in an emergency - -Go every 1-2 years - -Skipped question
