Article I: Legislative Branch • House of representatives • Qualifications • Age: must be at least twenty-five years old • Residents: must live in the state you are chosen to represent from • Citizenship: must be a United citizen for seven years
House of Representatives • Elections: every two years • Responsibilities: • Impose an collect taxes and duties • Borrow money • Regulate commerce with foreign nations and among the states • Coin money • Establish post office • Declare war • Raise and support an army and a navy
Article I: Senate • Elections: held every six years • Responsibilities: • Choose their officers • Have the sole power to try all impeachments • When the President of the United States is tried the Chief Justice shall preside • Qualifications: • Age: must be at least thirty years old • Residency: must live in the state you are chosen to represent
Article II: Executive Branch • Consists of the President and Vice-President • Qualifications: • must be at least thirty-five years old • Residency: must live in the United States for at least 14 years • Citizenship:
President • Elections: held every four years • Responsibilities: • Carry out and enforce laws made by Congress • Make treaties with other nations • Appoint certain government officials • Act as commander-n-chief of the army • Veto laws passed by Congress
Article III: Judicial Branch • Supreme Court • Needed to decide disputes between state governments and between citizens of two or more states. • Also needed for disputes between the national government and a state or citizen. • Appointed by the President for life or until they retire. • Two types of jurisdiction: original jurisdiction and appellate jurisdiction.
First Amendment • Congress shall make no law against the establishment of religion
Amendment Five • No person shall be forced to answer for a capital or otherwise infamous crime unless on an indictment of a Grand Jury. • No person shall be tried for same crime twice. • No person shall be denied of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. • Property cannot be taken away from a person without compensation.
Amendment Fourteen • Defines citizenship. • No state shall make laws that deprives a person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. • Nor shall they deny any person within its jurisdiction
