ADVISORY BOARD PURPOSE • CEEC Advisory Board Purpose • Promote viable links between the CEEC Department and the Engineering & Construction community. • Provide external review of the academic, outreach, and research functions of the department. • Provide advice and assistance and promote the growth and development of the department.
ADVISORY BOARD VARIATIONS • Membership • Geographic Distribution • Size • Makeup • Attraction to Members • Membership Involvement • Meeting Frequency/Content
NEEDS VARY • Financial Support • Scholarships, Equipment Funds, Capital Growth, Professorships, Endowments, General Support, etc. • Strategic Planning • Community Input/Buy-In • Internal Support – Dean, Provost, President • Political Support – interactions with politicians • Recruiting • Internships
AB-DH RELATIONSHIP • Confidant • Share intimate details of internal issues, faculty challenges, etc. • Solicit input on day-to-day operation • Advocate • Share needs, challenges, plans, aspirations • Solicit assistance with University, community, and political relationships • Oversight • Share plans, goals, and metrics of success • Solicit input for strategic planning, implementation strategies, etc
UNLV EXPERIENCE • Inherited 2 separate Advisory Boards • CEE – Small group, intimately involved in helping the department with internal strife and needs in all areas • CEM – Large group, exhausted from a long fight to save the program. • Strategy – Seat of the Pants! • Merged both boards into one • New Bylaws and Constitution • Open membership • Varied stature; very engaged • Most have other allegiances; comparisons common

MEETINGS • Executive Committee meets once/quarter • Discuss strategies, directions, needs • Develop and evaluate success metrics for AB • Entire AB meets once/quarter • Most recent meetings have been at local magnet schools • 7:30 – 9:00 am Fridays • Committees meet as needed • AB Meetings consist of “report outs” from committees
