  8. How to think about it: Three Examples • Who is the Best musician alive? • Record Sales, Awards, and musical achievements. • Length of Career. • Career outside of music industry. Humanitarian efforts. • Girls on Maury… • They may not be telling the truth but they have “facts” AND they act 1000% percent sure • The baby has your eyes (FACT 1) You sent me those texts (FACT 2) Your mother is here “acting a fool” (FACT 3) therefore, you ARE the father of little Spongebob Jr. • A fight. Just sayin’.

  9. Breaking Down the Essay • The five-paragraph essay should have these elements: • Introductory paragraph. “Hook” • Three supporting details. “Proof” • Concluding paragraph. “Summary” • You MUST think about these three factors BEFORE writing: • Focus – What is the Prompt Asking? • Audience – Who are you writing to? • Purpose – What kind of paper am I writing?

  10. Antigone Writing Prompt Choose one of the THREE prompts to write your five-paragraph essay. 1. Family vs. Authority 2.Gender Roles 3. Loose vs. Strict Government Which is more important to Sophocles – family or authority? look at Antigone, Ismene, Creon, and Haemon and at what happens to them and their relationships. Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your claims. Creon says to his son, Haemon, that it would be bad enough to yield to a man, but he would never yield to a woman (meaning Antigone). What does the play say about a woman’s place in society? Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your answers. Creon claims that the rule of the King must be obeyed even if it’s wrong in order to avoid anarchy and chaos. Does the play agree or disagree with Creon? Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your answers.

  14. S- Study the question 1. Which is more important to Sophocles – family or authority? Look at Antigone, Ismene, Creon, and Haemon and at what happens to them and their relationships. Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your claims. • Creon and Haemon • Yield to a woman • Yield? Oh yeah, to bend or to change your mind. Like, surrender or give way. • What’s wrong with that? • How does yielding to a woman deal with Creon and Haemon? • Who yields? How? Who doesn’t? Why? • What does the play say about a woman’s place in society? • Who are the women in the play? • Is there one who does something out of the norm for a woman? When? How do others react? • Is there a character who keeps up with her place in society? Is she liked more? Why? Why not? • Creon claims • He is king, so he would feel this way. • But, why does he say it? • So Creon believes that wrong law is ok • Is a lawless land a land of chaos? • Why is Creon right? Where does his logic fall short? • Does the play agree? • What happens to Creon? • How does the townspeople feel about Creon’s law? • Are his laws respected and obeyed? • Is there disorder in his kingdom? • So, is Creon right? • How can we tell if the play agrees or disagrees? • Family or authority? • Ok, Antigone, Ismene, Creon, Haemon… • Family relationships between them • Do they share the same ideology? • What happens to them and their relationships • So, what happens to their family ties? • How did authority affect their families? 2. Creon says to his son, Haemon, that it would be bad enough to yield to a man, but he would never yield to a woman (meaning Antigone). What does the play say about a woman’s place in society? Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your answers. 3. Creon claims that the rule of the King must be obeyed even if it’s wrong in order to avoid anarchy and chaos. Does the play agree or disagree with Creon? Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your answers.

  15. W- Whatdoes it want? 1. Which is more important to Sophocles – family or authority? Look at Antigone, Ismene, Creon, and Haemon and at what happens to them and their relationships. Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your claims. • Should I talk about Creon’s or Haemon’s opinion of women? Or…. Wait, it says, “what does the play say”… so, what does the play say? • But I have to mention Creon and Haemon. But, they’re not the topic of my paper…I’ll figure that out. • So, the paper is about…what? A woman’s place in society? • But I have to use quotes, so I am just going to…. Hmm.. See how women are placed, then maybe see how the play reacts to that? So many approaches… Let’s narrow this down • Does it want me to discuss these characters? • Am I writing about the characters or something else? • If I am to talk about the characters, how much and in which way? • “Look…at what happens and their relationships” • Ok, is this what they want? • How can I do that? • Specific quotes….ok, easy! • Am I talking about Creon’s rule or his opinion? Both? How much of each? • Is this asking my opinion….No, it says “does the PLAY agree or disagree”…so I’m talking about the play. • What is anarchy and chaos? Is it in this play…. Maybe I should talk about that…. Maybe, but is it satisfying the prompt? • So, I’m talking about Creon’s theory and the play’s reaction. Right? • Now, I have to get quotes to prove it. Easy, Smeazy!

  16. A- Align your thoughts I like this topic, let’s prove my point 1. Which is more important to Sophocles – family or authority? Look at Antigone, Ismene, Creon, and Haemon and at what happens to them and their relationships. Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your claims. Claim 2. Creon says to his son, Haemon, that it would be bad enough to yield to a man, but he would never yield to a woman (meaning Antigone). What does the play say about a woman’s place in society? Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your answers. Claim Claim 3. Creon claims that the rule of the King must be obeyed even if it’s wrong in order to avoid anarchy and chaos. Does the play agree or disagree with Creon? Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your answers. Let’s sum it up, and end this paper

  17. The Writing Process • The most important part of writing is the pre-writing. You can: • Organize your thoughts • Weigh your opinion • Figure out what will be your strongest and weakest points • You should never try to write without a plan. • Even if it’s a few notes in the margin, a detailed organizer, or a free-flow paragraph for thinking, a great paper is a planned paper. • Time is no excuse

  18. CHALK TALK • A “Chalk Talk” is a SILENT activity. • I have the three topics on the board. Silently, one by one, students will come and write something about the topics. This could be a factual point to make, an opinion, evidence from the text. Anything RELEVANT. • This is an activity where you can draw ideas from each other. • This can be a very fun, enlightening activity.

  19. Family vs. Authority Gender Roles Weak vs. Strict Government Spider-Web Organizer. List a few important points that you found from the Chalk Talk

  20. Possible Topic Paragraphs Evidence Opinion Prompts 1. Family vs. Authority 2. Gender Roles: Women in the Kingdom 3. Weak Law vs. Strong Law

  21. G- Get it on paper 1. Which is more important to Sophocles – family or authority? Look at Antigone, Ismene, Creon, and Haemon and at what happens to them and their relationships. Be sure to cite specific quotes from the play to support your claims. Once you have your thoughts in order, you can get it on paper…. It’s so easy to do IF you are organized…Which you are!! NEXT, we have to build the paper. But since we have an idea of how we’re going to do it. Writing this paper shouldn’t take that long. This way, you can focus on conventions: vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures… you make my paper shine 2.
