Current on Pandemic H1N1 2009 - PNG • 12 confirmed cases as 18 August, 2009 • First case lab confirmed 18/6/09 with onset 14/6/09 • Surveillance strategy; Case-based surveillance to detect ILI and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness cases with travel history together with Routine and Event-based surveillance to detect cases and clusters • Community transmission not established • Some positive System developments due to the Pandemic Influenza (H1N1)
Response to Pandemic H1N1 2009 • Searching of cases using case definition • Home isolation unless require hospitalization • Provided Tamiflu who met the case definition • Contact tracing • Triage, infection control • Advise to public • Supply of Tamiflu and PPE
Pandemic Plan • The initial Plan was initiated due to the threat of SARS and Avian Influenza • National Executive Council approves the revised plan responding to H1N1 2009 in July 2009 with initial injection of approx US$3.5Million • Plan to be integrated into the National Disaster Plan • Provinces responded by re-activating their own plans
ILI Surveillance • 2xNew additional ILI surveillance sites established • Plan for 3 more sites to be established
Laboratory • The Pacific Ministerial Meeting agrees for improved laboratory service to provide real-time results for pandemic influenza’s and other public health events • PNG plans to have its NIC to be upgraded to do R-T-PCR/ 2009
Health Systems • Establishment of Control & Command Center for Public Health Events • Hospitals establish triage, infection control and clinical management protocols • Strengthen weekly events reporting • Development of Weekly surveillance bulletin • Experience in IHR reporting
Future plans • Continue review of the NPP, integrate into the Nat Disaster Plan • Upgrade NIC to do R-T-PCR • Expansion of ILI surveillance sites • Strengthen Surveillance and response capacity for public health events including Public Health Lab • Continue support for hospitals to establish triage, infection control and clinical management of respiratory infections • Continue support to provinces develop plans
