Should Parent Be Penalized For “Raising A Bully”? -Monique R. Lange
INTASC Standard, Description, and Rationale • INTASC Standard #3 The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. • Description I investigated an educational current event and researched both pros and cons of my topic. • Rationale The purpose of this assignment was to identify and research an educational current event.
Statistics • According to the Center for Disease Control, Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people. • For every one, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Solution In Monona, Wisconsin, parents are now being held liable and cited for failing to take action when their children bully others.
Detective Sergeant Ryan Losby fronted this "parent liability" clause. • Losby credited his research which showed that nearly all perpetrators of recent school shootings felt they were victims of bullying. • According to the ordinance, tickets will be handed out only in extreme cases. Parents who are making a conscious effort to address their child's behavior would not be ticketed.
Parent’s Should Be Penalized for Their Children’s Poor Behavior Because… • Forces parents/guardians to address children’s behavior. • Financial Incentive for children-Money spent on fines, so no new clothes, video games, electronics, etc. • Moral Incentive for children-Disappointment of parents/guardians
Parent’s Should NOT Be Penalized for Their Children’s Poor Behavior Because… • State laws have no right to interfere with parenting styles. • Violence also in media and should also be fined for affecting youth. • Inclusion of Parents/guardians with mental or physical illness?
Is This Really An Effective Solution? • Author and professional speaker, Zeke Bambolo believes this ordinance to be senseless. • “We do not fine parents for their child’s theft, assault, murder, and other egregious crimes. So why do we want to fine them for bullying?” • Zeke Bambolo also adds that in the past, city governments were not asked to step in to address how children should address their peers.
Some Thing to Think About… • Why should ANY government entity have the right to delegate how children are raised and what lessons are enforced? • Violence also in media…Do recording artists and film producers contribute to the nation’s bullying epidemic?
