Heros of the Bible“Joshua” • A Lesson ByBishop Andy C. Lewter, D. Min.
Introduction • This is the latest lesson in my Heros of the Bible Series • Today’s looks at the man that succeeded Moses and led the Hebrews to the “Promised Land”, Joshua
Early Life of Joshua • Joshua is one of the few survivors that left Egypt with Moses and eventually returned to the Promised Land • He begins as a protege of Moses and emerges as the key character that brings the people to Canaan
Background • Born: 1550 BCE, Egypt • Died: 1440 based upon him 110 years old (Joshua 23:1,2) • Introduced as one of 12 spies sent to spy out the land of Canaan • Arises as leader upon the death of Moses
The Name of Joshua • Hebrew-Yehoshua • Formal Name- Hoshua Bar Nun • English- Jesus is the English form of the Greek version of the name • Literal Translation- God is our salvation
Joshua and the Exodus • According to ?, Joshua accompanies Moses part of the way up Mt Sinai • Joshua is one of only two spies who bring back a positive report from spying Egypt • According to ? God chose him to succeed Moses
Joshua As Judge • Joshua is not a prophet like Moses, a king like David or a patriarch like Abraham • Joshua is a “Judge” who were military leaders who were committed to keeping the people aligned with the laws of God
Joshua in Canaan • The Jordan parts as did the Red Sea • Joshua defeats Jericho • Loses Ai initially • God causes the sun to stand still • God fights the battle for his people
Joshua in the Islamic Tradition • While not mentioned specifically by name, the Quran does speak of the 2 spies that give Moses a positive report • Islamic literature also declares that “God did not stop the setting of the sun for any human, except Joshua”
Summary • The life of Joshua illustrates that determination and tenacity can very well result in God granting enormous victories and fulfillment of promises
