Landau Colliery Project overview
LANDAU COLLIERYLIFE EXTENSION PROJECT EIA Public Participation Meeting 31 January 2013
CONTENTS • Location of the mine and the project • Need and desirability for this project • Details of the project • Infrastructure – relocations under consideration • Infrastructure – construction • Summary
LOCATION OF THE MINE AND PROJECT • Landau Colliery is located • approximately 10km west of • Emalahleni • comprising: • Kromdraai and Excelsior Sections to • the north of the N4 • with Umlalazi and Schoongezicht • Sections lying south of the N4 NORTH PIT KROMDRAAI CENTRAL PIT CENTRAL PIT EXT SOUTH PIT EXCELSIOR PIT SCHOONIE MINI PIT Clewer NAVIGATION PLANT UMLALAZI PIT
LOCATION OF THE MINE AND PROJECT • The mining area lies completely within the AATC existing mineral rights and surface rights boundaries • The mining area is divided into two sections – Schoongezicht West and Navigation East Transnet railway SCHOONGEZICHT WEST AREA NAVIGATION EAST AREA Surface rights line Navigation Plant Landau Blaauwkraans disposal facility
NEED AND DESIRABILITY FOR THIS PROJECT • Landau Colliery’s existing operations will start to run out of coal in late 2014, and will be completely finished by 2019 • This Life Extension Project is necessary to extend the life of mine of Landau Colliery • to satisfy Anglo American Thermal Coal’s strategy and business plan • Including export and domestic customers • Maintain presence in the South African market • sustain the current operation • Provide continued employment for current Landau Colliery employees • The project intends to extend the life of Landau Colliery by 8 to 10 years • maintaining approximately the same production into the future as the current operation
DETAILS OF THE PROJECT • The mine will operate in two main pit areas – north of the railway line (Schoongezicht West) and south of the railway line (Navigation East) • It will be an opencast mine operation. The coal reserves in the area are mostly previously mined from underground; the new operation will mine out the remaining pillars from surface • The previously mined workings are flooded with water – which will have to be pumped out prior to mining (to the expansion of the Emalahleni Water Reclamation Plant) • The mine intends to use the existing Coal Preparation Plant at the Navigation Complex (Navigation Plant), and associated Blaauwkraans Disposal Facility • In order to maximise the reserves, a number of infrastructure relocations together with new infrastructure items are being considered • The project is currently in Pre-feasibility phase, and intends to commence mining in late 2014
