  1. The Story of How a Society Changed Its Publisher (A Cinderella Story?)

  2. Once upon a time, there was a learned society.

  3. International Council for the Exploration of the Sea

  4. International Council for the Exploration of the Sea • ICES was founded in Copenhagen in 1902 to coordinate and promote marine research in the North Atlantic. This includes adjacent seas such as the Baltic Sea and North Sea. • The ICES Secretariat has a staff of 41, who provide scientific, administrative, and secretarial support to the ICES Community.

  5. ICES acts as a meeting point for a community of more than 1600 marine scientists from 20 countries around the North Atlantic. • Scientists working through ICES gather information about the marine ecosystem. As well as filling gaps in existing knowledge, this information is also developed into unbiased, non-political advice. • ICES Advice is used by its 20 member countries, which fund and support ICES.

  6. ICES Publications ICES publishes ICES Advice as well as reports on the results of its working groups and expert groups.

  7. ICES Cooperative Research Reports • ICES Techniques in Marine Environmental Sciences • ICES Working and Expert Group Reports • ICES Identification Leaflets for Plankton • ICES Identification Leaflets for Diseases and Parasites of Fish and Shellfish

  8. ICES Journal of Marine Science

  9. ICES Journal of Marine Science • First published in 1903 under the title of Publications de Circonstance. • Published from 1926 to 1991 as the Journal du Conseil. • In 1991, the title was changed to the ICES Journal of MarineScience (with the subtitle Journal du Conseil). • In 1991, published by Academic Press, which became an Elsevier imprint in 2001.

  10. In January 2007, publication was taken over by Oxford University Press.

  11. Mission The Journal serves as a foundation for scientific advice across a broad spectrum of management and conservation issues related to the marine environment.

  20. Behind what is in our head Financial • ICES does not depend on income generated by IJMS. • IJMS started to turn a modest profit after Academic Press assumed the role of publisher.

  21. ICES was seeking transparency on both sides of the ledger – income and expenses. A detailed, drill-down accounting of the Journal’s financial situation. • Income • What is the pricing structure? • What is the total income generated from these and any other sources? • Expenses

  22. Copy-editing • In matters of style, grammar, and usage the Journal must conform to the highest international standards. • Improve readability and enhance credibility.

  23. Copy-editing • Word list: bycatch not by-catch • Style sheet: avoid “due to”ALWAYS different from NEVER different thanStyle of references • Rewriting: verbosity, tautology, from inelegant to more elegant

  24. Establish communication and understanding between the editor-in-chief and the copy-editor • Established a relationship with a limited number of copy-editors with whom a continuous and consistent association can be maintained.

  25. Establish a partnership • Trust • Mutual respect • At least the perception that we were not being cheated

  26. Tender process • Send invitations to tender • Visit each publisher • Evaluation

  27. Invitation to tender • Financial • Copy-editing • Transfer/transition • Marketing and promotion support • Editorial and production support • Subscription fulfilment • Electronic publishing

  28. Evaluation • Impression of visit • Written proposal • Production support and quality • Copyediting

  29. Evaluation • Marketing and promotion support • Electronic publishing and editorial management • Publisher’s position in the sector • Financial

  30. Thebottomline • ICES felt that it would be better served by a smaller organization than a multi-national corporation

  31. ...and they lived happily ever after.
