CLOUDS Chapter 11 Section 1
Clouds • Clouds are classified mainly by shape and height. • The shape and height of clouds vary with temperature, pressure, and the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere. • The three main cloud shapes are stratus, cumulus, and cirrus.
Clouds: Stratus • Stratus clouds form layers, or smooth even sheets in the sky. • Usually form at low altitudes • May be associated with fair weather or rain or snow. • Stratus clouds may form a cloud called fog when air is cooled to its dew point near the ground.
Clouds: Cumulus • Cumulus clouds are masses of puffy, white clouds, often with flat bases. • They can be associated with fair weather or thunderstorms.
Clouds: Cirrus • Cirrus clouds appear fibrous or curly. • They are thin, white, wispy, feathery clouds made of ice crystals. • Cirrus clouds are associated with fair weather, but they can indicate approaching storms.
Clouds: Height • Some prefixes of cloud names describe the height of the cloud base. • Cirro- describes high clouds • Alto- describes middle-elevation clouds • Strato- describes low elevation clouds • Prefixes and cloud names may be combined, for example Cirrostratus which describes stratus clouds at a high altitude.
Clouds: Rain or Snow Producing • Rain or snow producing clouds often have the word nimbus attached to them. • The term nimbus is Latin for “dark rain cloud” • Little sunlight can pass through this type of cloud • A thunderstorm is called a cumulonimbus cloud. • Cumulonimbus clouds can reach 18 km in height. • Nimbostratus clouds are layered clouds that can bring long, steady rain or snowfall.
