State of High School Soccer Nationally • Soccer is the fifth-most popular sport for boys and girls at the high school level. • According to the 2008-09 High School Athletics Participation Survey which is listed in the 2009-10 NFHS Handbook: • 383,824 – H.S. Boys participate in the sport • 344,534 – H.S. Girls participate in the sport • 11,139 – H.S. Boys programs participate • throughout the country • 10,548 – H.S. Girls programs participate • throughout the country

Current Team Uniform RequirementsFront Front of Uniform Options All jersey’s (except goalkeepers) shall be numbered on the front with a different Arabic number at least 4 inches in height This number must be placed on the jersey or short 1 manufacturer’s logo 2¼ square inches is permitted on each item (visible anywhere on the uniform) Page: 21-22 Home team shall wear white or light jerseys and socks Visiting team shall wear dark jerseys and socks

Eight-Goal Rule Shall be in effect for ALL REGULAR SEASON games AND District Tournament matches UNLESS, prior to the start of the season, a district council elects not to use the 8-goal rule. 8-Goal rule provides that if, at anytime after the mid-point of the second half of play, one team leads by 8 or more goals, the match shall be terminated. VHSL “Play for a Cure” • VHSL Play for a Cure is an invitation to all teams in all member schools to plan and participate in an event designed to increase awareness about breast cancer among high school students, faculty and staff, and the school community at large. • May 2-21, 2011 has been designated for events that raise awareness about breast cancer. • Toolkit on the website

  25. OFFICIAL CALL is the EXCLUSIVE PROVIDER of officials gear at VHSL-sponsored rules clinics OFFICIAL CALL is the only vendor permitted at VHSL-sponsored clinics. Other vendors may arrange with associations to sell at regular association meetings.
