Our Role: The pediatric dietitians are licensed, registered experts who ensure that patients achieve optimal growth and nutrition status. Utilizing a unique skill set, the pediatric dietitians meet the hospital standards and goals through service, education, research, and clinical expertise.

Presentations, State/ Regional • Carrie Finch presented improvement poster at VON collaborative meeting in Austin, TX entitled: “Optimizing Nutrition at Birth for very low-birth weight infants.” Carrie also presented on neonatal nutrition initiatives to Pediatric Grand Rounds & Sodexo networking call • Cecilia McMillan presented improvement poster at VON collaborative meeting in Minneapolis entitled: “Optimizing Enteral Nutrition in very low-birth weight infants.” • Jennifer Franks presented at MASPEN on Pediatric PN Writing 101 • Lauren Whiteside presented on diet therapies for epilepsy at the 1st Epilepsy Bootcamp and Sodexo networking call • Katherine Boyce interviewed by Abbott on nutrition therapy for GI disorders for international conference
Board Certifications • Jennifer Franks renewed her certification as Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) which is required every 5 years. • Katherine Boyce achieved Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) • Lauren Whiteside earned her Board Certification as a Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition (CSP)

Vermont Oxford Network (VON) • With the VON nutrition initiative, the percent of VLBW infants avoiding extrauterine growth restriction at discharge is 7-10%, decreased from 35% in early 2009 • Potential Best Practices being used at MUSC: • Monitor nutritional intake and nutritional outcome measures into medical management of prematures infants. • Start parenteral nutrition (PN) soon after birth, with amino acids within two hours and lipids within 24 hours of birth, in infants < 1.5 kg. • Promote and use human milk as the preferred nutritional substrate for premature infants • Implement feeding guidelines which include early trophic feeds, an algorithm for managing residuals, and systematic advancement for infants < 1.5 kg. • Supplement human milk with additional protein, calories, minerals, and micronutrients to achieve at least 3.5 grams/kg/day of protein delivery and adequate growth. • Promote post-discharge breastfeeding with appropriate nutrient fortification.
Patient Experience • Sodexo’s Star Chef Club • Cecilia (Kennedy) McMillan • Child referred from Child Life or Pediatric Dietitian to have chef come to bedside to allow child to participate in preparing his or her meal. Each child receives a chef hat & apron • Ketogenic Cooking • Lauren Whiteside • To enhance the palatability of the diet, Nutricia sponsored Chef Neil Pallister-Bosomworth, a chef from the United Kingdom, to design carbohydrate-rich foods that are compatible with the diet. Tours are conducted in the United States to teach families how to prepare delicious ketogenic recipes.
