HardieTrim HardieTrim Accessories – Flat Tabs & Corner Tabs Did You Know? • HardieTrim - Concealed Fastening Tabs • For Corners, Band Boards, Windows, & Door Trim Applications: • HardieTrim can be installed with Flat Tabs (JH SKU 280154) & Corner Tabs (JH SKU 280155) which provide concealed fastening. • Reducing the need for ColorPlus touch-up, and increasing the look of the ColorPlus Technology. • Only Flat & Corner Tabs can be used with HardieTrim boards to create a concealed fastening system. Engineered, & Coated Aluminum. • Additional framing may be required to ensure the Flat & Corner Tabs are fastened properly to the structure. • Special attention should be paid to the framing when using a sheathing that does not have the fastener holding equivalent to 7/16” OSB or ½” Plywood sheathing.
HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ & NT3 using Trim Tabs General Fastening for Hardie Trim Tabs: Flat & Corner Tabs STEP 1: Attach Flat Tabs to the back side of the Trim with 4 – 18 ga ½” L x ¼” W narrow crown corrosion resistant staples, equally spaced in one row, positioned no closer than ½” from trim edges, using a pneumatic staple gun (Figure 7.1) STEP 2: For wood frame construction, attach the trim to the building using 2 – 6d siding nails fastened through the Flat Tabs. ET&F or equivalent fasteners may be used to attach the Flat Tabs to Steel framed construction. (Figure 7.2) Fastener spacing will vary based on application. Refer to specific sections in these instructions for required fastener spacing by application (window, band board, etc.). (Figure 7.17) 1 Fig 7.1 2 Fig 7.2
HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ & NT3 using Trim Tabs Installing Hardie Trim Tabs: Corner Tabs – Page 1 Step 1: Attach Corner Tabs to the backside of the trim with 8 – 18 ga ½” L x ¼” W narrow crown corrosion resistant staples using a pneumatic staple gun. *Ensure the Corner Tabs are fastened tight and straight to the trim boards. (Figures 7.3) Step 2: For wood frame construction, attach the trim to the building with 2 – 6d siding nails fastened through the Corner Tabs. (Figure 7.6) *Attach a Corner Tab 1” from each edge & every 20” oc. HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ & NT3 using Trim Tabs Installing Hardie Trim Tabs: Flat Tabs – Around Windows, Doors & Other Openings • Always trim the opening prior to the installation of the siding (Figure 7.9). • Place one Flat Tab at each end of the trim and one Flat Tab every 16” OC. • Attach the HardieTrim & Flat Tabs around the opening as shown in Figures 7.7 & 7.8. 2 3 3 Fig 7.9 1 Fig 7.8 Fig 7.7
HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ & NT3 using Trim Tabs Installing Hardie Trim Tabs: Flat Tabs – Installation on Band Boards A Drip Flashing is Required over the HardieTrim when being installed in a horizontal application. (Figure 7.10) Place Flat Tab at the end of each piece of HardieTrim and one tab a maximum of 16” o.c. (Figure 7.11) The Flat Tabs should be attached to the trim in an alternating pattern . 16” oc alternating Top & Bottom of the Band Board. HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ without Trim Tabs Installation of Outside Corners: Pre-Built Corner Installation • Corners made from 5/4 or 4/4 HardieTrim boards should be pre-assembled before they’re installed. A pre-assembled corner looks better and makes the installation quicker. • Step 1: Pre-Build the Corner Trim • To join two pieces of 5/4 or 4/4 HardieTrim boards for a corner: • Drive a (2”) 16 ga Corrosion-resistant finish nail (½”) in from the edge & spaced (16”) apart along the length of the corner trim. (9) 16 ga finish nails per 12’ piece of HardieTrim. • Step 2: Fastening the Pre-Built Corner Trim to the Wall • To Fasten (4”) Corners to the Wall: • Drive one finish nail into each face of the corner with the nails spaced (16”) apart. • To Fasten (6”) Corners to the Wall: • Drive a pair of finish nails into each face of the corner with the nails spaced (16”) apart. • Nails should be kept (3/4”) from the edges of the HardieTrim and (1”) from the ends. HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ without Trim Tabs Installation of Outside Corners: Weather Cuts • When walls are more than (12’) high, splice corner boards together using weather cutsof at least a 22.5o angle. • The angle of the weather cut must slope downward and away from the building. • Nail both boards to the building with the same attachment schedule as for pre-built corners. • Paint or Prime ALL Cut Edges • DO NOTInstall ANY Trim products over James Hardie Siding. Installation of Inside Corners: Single & Double Inside Corners can be made with either a single 5/4 or 4/4 HardieTrim board in the corner, or with one board on each wall depending on the desired look. Fig 7.18 NOTE:5/4 HardieTrim is to be used with all James Hardie Siding Products in a butt-too installation method. 4/4 HardieTrim is to be used over HardiePanel ONLY. Fig 7.16
HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ without Trim Tabs Fig 7.19 Installation of the Band Board: • Any width of 5/4 or 4/4 HardieTrim can be used for Band Board depending on the type of detail desired. • When installing the band board, pay special attention to the flashing details and allow for water egress. • Make sure that the weather resistant barrier laps over the flashing for a continuous drainage plane. • Caulk between the underside of the band board and the siding below. (where permitted by local building codes). Install an inverted “J” Trim for the last course of the lap siding to terminate into. • Maintain a min. (1/4”) gap between the horizontal flashing and the James Hardie Siding above it. • Do not caulk between the flashing and the siding above the band board. • If running HardiePlank or HardieShingle above the band board, make sure to use a starter strip just like below, to maintain the correct plank angle. • Small periodic gaps should be left in the starter strip to provide an escape route for excess moisture that may drain down behind the siding.
HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ without Trim Tabs Installation of the Band Board: Continued To attach the Band Board to the building: How-to: Fastening the Band Board to the Wall Drive (2) two (2”) 16 ga corrosion resistant finish nails every (16”) for (4”) and (6”) band boards. For (8”) band boards, use (3) three (2”) 16 ga corrosion resistant finish nails every (16”). For (12”) band boards, use (4) four (2”) 16 ga corrosion resistant finish nails every (16”). Use bevel-cut splice joints of at least 22.5o to join long lengths of 5/4 or 4/4 HardieTrim together.

HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ without Trim Tabs Installation of the Window & Door Trim: • Windows & Doors must be installed per the manufacturer’s instructions. • Once the HardieTrim is installed, a drip flashing must be installed above the trim & lapped under the weather resistant barrier correctly. • Install HardieTrim around doors & windows using the “cap over” method, which means that the header or horizontal top piece of trim extends and caps over the vertical jamb legs on either side of the door or window. • For windows, the bottom trim piece fits between the vertical jamb legs. • For Cap-Over Trim Installation: • Start by measuring the length of the bottom edge of the window. (not including the nailing flange). Cut a piece of trim to that length and install it. • Next measure from the bottom of the installed trim to the top of the window. (not including the nailing flange). Cut two pieces of trim to that length and install them on either side of the window. • For the Cap, measure the distance from the outside edge of both vertical jamb legs. Cut a piece of HardieTrim and Install it. • For Doors the Process is the same except that it starts with the vertical side jamb legs. (Step 2) 2 3 1

HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ without Trim Tabs Installation of HardieTrim - Rake & Fascia: • For Fascia and Rake board applications, James Hardie requires that ALL HardieTrim products be nailed over a solid wood or steel Subfascia. • James Hardie recommends that the fascia be no more than (2”) larger than the Subfascia. (e.g. Over a nominal 2x6 Subfascia, Install an (8”) fascia board (actual size 7 ¼”). • On longer Fascia runs, join HardieTrim with weather/bevel cuts a minimum of 22.5o miter is required. • A Drip Edge Flashing is required over HardieTrim Fascia
HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim HZ without Trim Tabs Installation of Frieze Board Trim: Install the HardieTrim Frieze Board direct to the wall or rainscreen. Run the HardiePlank or HardieShingle siding up to the frieze board and caulk the junction of the frieze board and siding (where applicable by local building code) or Install an inverted “J” Channel for the HardiePlank or HardieShingle to tuck into at the underside of the Frieze or Band Board. When using HardiePanel siding, it is acceptable to install the frieze board over the HardiePanel siding. If joints are necessary for longer runs, join the HardieTrim with a min. of a 22.5o bevel cut. Fasten the HardieTrim frieze board every (16”) using (2”) long 16 ga non-corrosive finish nails. 3 1 4 2 5
HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim Battens Getting Started: Did you Know? • HardieTrim Battens are intended to be used with HardiePanel vertical siding to achieve a board and batten look. • HardieTrim Battens must be attached to the HardiePanel while still penetrating into wood or steel framing. • Use ONLY approved fasteners from the HardieTrim fastener specification table. 2 Step 1: Installing HardieTrim Battens Determine your desired layout (Over Framing) and mark top & bottom of the HardiePanel where the HardieTrim Battens will be installed. To ensure the HardieTrim Battens are installed vertically and parallel to each other, Snap Chalk Lines (Blue Chalk Works Best) or Use a Level to draw straight vertical, parallel lines. Center the HardieTrim Battens over the lines established in Step 2. Ensure the fasteners are a minimum of (¾”) from the edges, (1”) from ends, and a maximum of (16”) apart down the length of the HardieTrim Battens. 3 1 2

HardieTrim Installation of HardieTrim Battens Getting Started: Horizontal Joint Treatment – Did you Know? Horizontal HardieTrim Batten joints must occur at the same location as the horizontal joints in the HardiePanel Siding. How-to: Install Horizontal HardieTrim Batten Joints Option 1: No Horizontal Band Board If HardieTrim Battens are going to be installed over the horizontal HardiePanel joints without the use of a horizontal band board, follow the procedure as illustrated in fig. 7.29. Start Installing HardieTrim Battens by creating a 22.5o weather-cut, making a joint at the same location as the panel joint. Attach the Bottom Batten First. Make sure the Top Batten has a matching 22.5o weather-cut, then install the Top Batten. Fig 7.29

Horizontal HardieTrim Batten joints must occur at the same location as the horizontal joints in the HardiePanel Siding. How-to: Install Horizontal HardieTrim Batten Joints Option 2: With a Band Board If HardieTrim Battens are going to be installed over the horizontal HardiePanel joints with the use of a horizontal band board, follow the procedure as illustrated in fig. 7.30. If HardieTrim Battens are to be installed horizontally, they must be installed in the same manner as in fig. 7.30. Attach the bottom batten tight to the bottom edge of the band board. Leave a Min. (¼”) gap above the horizontal Z-flashing,. Cut & Install the Top Batten. Fig 7.30
