This presentation explains the importance of conducting a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) before starting any new job or activity. It provides step-by-step instructions for conducting a JSA and identifies the hazards associated with changing a flat tire on a car. The presentation also emphasizes the need for proper risk mitigation strategies to ensure worker safety.

ANY New Job/ Activity Before starting ANY new job/ activity, you need to: • Recognize the Hazards • Plan the work • Protect the people
Job Safety Analysis • Break down the task into steps • Identify the hazards connected with each step • State how you will mitigate (minimize) the hazard
Job Safety Analysis • Steps and procedures are basically the same thing. • Hazards are what can hurt you • Mitigations are how to protect yourself
Break job down into key steps AVOID • Too much detail– Too many steps • Too little detail-- so general that basic steps are not recorded
Group Activity Job Safety Analysis “Changing a Flat Tire on a Car”
10-15 min Activity • As a group, list the steps needed to change a tire on a car • Identify the hazards of each step • Compare your results to the following slides
Key Steps (TOO MANY)Changing a Flat Tire • Pull off road • Put car in “park” • Set brake • Activate emergency flashers • Open door • Get out of car • Walk to trunk • Put key in lock • Open trunk • Remove jack
Key Steps (NOT ENOUGH)Changing a Flat Tire • Park car • take off flat tire • put on spare tire • drive away
Park car, set brake remove jack & tire from trunk loosen lug nuts jack up car remove tire set new tire jack down car tighten lug nuts store tire & jack Key Job Steps JUST RIGHTChanging a Flat tire
JSA Process • Every person who will participate in the work participates in the JSA process- including contractors. • JSA is to be conducted before work begins. • After the job, review the JSA to see if any lessons learned can be applied.
Parking Car Struck by Traffic Removing tire & jack Back Strain bang head on trunk Loosen lug nuts back/arm strain slip & fall Jacking up car car could fall off jack Setting new tire fingers pinched back strain Tighten nuts back strain slip & fall Recognize the Hazards
Reduce the Risk • A mitigation is the same as “solution” or a way to prevent accidents, injury or harm. • A mitigation is the answer to the question, “How will you reduce the risk?”
Ways to Reduce Risk • Identify source of the risk • Use engineering, procedures or PPE to reduce risk
Change the work site • Tools, materials, equipment layout or location • Study change carefully for other benefits (costs, time savings)
Change procedures • What should the worker do to eliminate the hazard • How should it be done? • Document changes in the JSA
SIMOPS Concerns?? • Changes may affect other jobs or work processes. • Check the new process once it has been redesigned. • Did it reduce risk?
